### catalysts and intermediates

In a multi-step reaction, how can you tell which of the reactants and products that cancel out are catalysts instead of intermediates?

I believe catalysts are in the first step as a reactants and get cancelled out later in the mechanism. An intermediate is produced within the mechanism and then cancelled out. Both are cancelled, but a catalyst is a reactant in the beginning of the whole mechanism while an intermediate is made within the process.

intermediates will be products of one step, and reactants of a later step, getting used up in the process. They will not remain at the end. Catalysts are there to begin with, and are not used up.
