Effect of temp. on rate constants

Postby LG2019 » Thu Mar 14, 2019 2:08 pm

Why does raising the temperature of a reaction increase the rate constant of the reaction with the higher activation barrier more than it will the rate constant of of the reaction with the lower energy barrier?

If you have something with a really big activation energy, it needs all the help it can get, so raising the temperature will have a substantial effect on increasing the rate. Conversely, if a reaction has already a low activation energy, the rate is occurring quickly already. Raising the temperature is not going to have as big of an effect on rate.
