Forward and reverse reaction rates

Postby Malia Shitabata 1F » Fri Mar 06, 2020 2:39 pm

For A+B->C+D, the forward rate is k[A][B] and for the reverse reaction C+D->A+B, the rate is k'[C][D]. Why is it k' as opposed to just k?

There is a different rate for both the forward and reverse reactions so we use k and k'.

We use k vs k' to differentiate between the rates for forward and reverse reactions.

k and k' have different numerical values, it is not necessarily a derivative or anything like that. Its the same as just arbitrarily writing k(forward) and k(reverse) they are both rate constants but they aren't the same number.

k' signifies the reverse reaction rate specifically.
