catalysts in balanced equations

Postby lauraxie2e » Tue Mar 10, 2020 12:56 pm

A catalyst is something that shows up in the reactants of the first equation but disappears by the products of the last equation as opposed to an intermediate which is produced throughout the reactions and disappears, right?

Yes, in other words, catalysts are present before and after a reaction whereas intermediates are only present during the reaction.

So if the catalyst is not present in the products of the final reaction, does that mean it is fully consumed throughout the overall reaction?

a catalyst only speeds up a reaction, but it is NOT consumed!

That's right, catalysts are present at the start and end of the reaction.
