how do you identify an intermediate versus a catalyst?

A catalyst is not used up in the reactions. An intermediate is created and later consumed.

An intermediate is formed in one step and then used up in the next. A catalyst isn't formed as it is present in the beginning and end. The catalyst is not consumed as the reaction progresses.

The catalyst in the reaction will not be used up in the reaction. Therefore, it will be in the final overall reaction equation. Whereas an intermediate will be used up and won't show up in the overall reaction equation.

An intermediate is formed in one step and then it is consumed in another step. A catalyst on the other hand is not consumed by the reaction.

Do we cancel out the intermediates when dealing with the elementary reactions then if they do not appear in the final reaction?

A catalyst is not used up in the reaction, an intermediate is used up in the next step
