An intermediate is formed during one step and used up during another, whereas a catalyst does not get used up.

A catalyst isn’t used up whereas an intermediate gets formed during an elementary step then used up and does not appear in the overall reaction

In the mechanism steps of a reaction, a catalyst shows up first as a product, but an intermediate shows up first as a reactant.
