Free Energy of Activation

Postby Carolina Gomez 2G » Sat Mar 13, 2021 9:47 pm

In the kinetics outline it states:
"Understand the difference between activation energy and free energy of activation."
What is the free energy of activation?

I believe that the free energy of activation refers to the Gibbs free energy. I've seen this as a response on chemistry community before, so I am not entirely sure that this is valid.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that free energy of activation refers to Gibbs Free Energy energy barrier that the activation energy must overcome.

I think so too. It might be the energy difference between the transition state and the reactants, but I am also not completely sure.

I believe it has to do with the difference in energy that a reaction must overcome in order to have sufficient activation energy. However, it might also refer to the difference in energy after sufficient activation energy has been reached to the highest total energy produced in the reaction.
