How does a catalyst affect the product of a reaction?

A catalyst directly affects the rate of the reaction by speeding it up! A catalyst also lowers the activation energy.

Catalysts speed up reactions by lowering its activation energy and changing the reaction's pathway. Catalysts are not consumed in a reaction and increase both the rates of forward and reverse reactions.

Catalysts do not affect the product of a reaction. They are involved in the kinetics of the reaction, but not the the thermodynamics, so the first and final states stay the same. What the do achieve, though, is a speedier reaction through the lowering of the activation energy of that chemical process, thereby increasing the speed of the rxn. I hope that helps!

Just curious as to why catalysts aren't involved in in the thermodynamics? Is it because kinetics favors reactions with lower activation energies while thermodynamics favors more stable ones?

This is because catalysts don't change the energy of the reactants or products. Therefore since thermodynamics deals with energy they are not involved.

Thermodynamics have to do with the movement of the particles and how much energy they have during changes in a system. Kinetics also favors reactions with lower activation energies like you said.
