intermediate question

Postby Lexi Saket 2B » Thu Mar 14, 2024 7:06 pm

I know catalysts are not consumed in the reaction, but are intermediates consumed?

Hii, I believe that intermediates do get consumed. For example in class Dr. Lavelle used the example NO2(g) + CO(g) > NO(g) + CO2(g). The intermediate in this case was NO3(g). The intermediate is reacting with other reactants to form new products (consumed) and no longer shows up in the overall reaction. Hope this helps!!

Hi, yes intermediates are used up and consumed along the reaction. Intermediates are produced in one step while in a subsequent step, they are consumed. They help carry out a reaction but they are not part of the overall balanced equation.
