Catalysts are going to be species in your initial reaction that are consumed at first to aid in the process of the reaction, but are later produced again, since they do not get consumed and can be reutilized. Meanwhile, the intermediates are stepping stones along the reaction that will eventually get used up, and will not be present in the final product.
