catalysts

Postby 806018033 » Sun Mar 17, 2024 11:06 pm

Just to clarify catalysts are consumed then produced and intermediates and produced then consumed?

Yup! Catalysts are going to be species in your initial reaction that are consumed at first to aid in the process of the reaction, but are later produced again, since they do not get consumed and can be reutilized. Meanwhile, the intermediates are stepping stones along the reaction that will eventually get used up, and will not be present in the final product.

intermediates are consumed in the reaction while catalysts may be consumed in one step, but are ultimately reproduced and present at the end of the reaction

yes, so if you have this reaction mechanism:
A + B --> C +D
C + E --> F + B

B would be a catalyst, and C would be an intermediate

catalysts are never consumed. they will be on the top left and bottom right of reactions while intermediates are consumed and will be the top right and bottom left usually.

Catalysts are consumed during a reaction by participating in the reaction mechanism. However, they are regenerated by the end of the reaction, remaining unchanged in quantity and composition. Intermediates, on the other hand, are produced as reaction intermediates and are subsequently consumed to form the final products. In short catalysts appear in the beginning and end, intermediates are formed and also used up.
