Catalysts in a reaction

Postby Natalie LeRaybaud 1G » Thu Mar 15, 2018 2:16 pm

Do catalysts always appear on the left side of the reaction initially and then move to the right in the second step of the reaction?

If the catalyst shows up in the reactant side, then it must show up again in the products side of the equation at some step (not necessarily only the second) because catalysts cannot be totally consumed by the reaction.

At some point in the reaction mechanism, the catalyst would show up on the left side as well because it is important that the enzyme cancels when you add up the elementary steps.

How can we tell if a substance is a catalyst or an intermediate?

If the substance shows up in the products and isnt cancelled out later by a reactant, then it can not be an intermediate.

Intermediates are produced by one of the reaction steps, meaning it first appears as a product. It then acts as a reactant in subsequent steps, ensuring that it is cancelled out in the overall reaction.

Catalysts go from reactant to product, while intermediates go from product to reactant.

Yes! Intermediates are not in the overall reaction too; they are produced then consumed. Catalysts are consumed then produced.

I'm a little confused so catalysts are consumed in a reaction?

Catalysts are regenerated. They are used up, then produced.

How can you tell the difference between a catalyst and an intermediary?

Yes, catalysts always go from reactant to product and not the other way around

A catalyst will be present at the beginning of a reaction and at the end of the reaction. An intermediate on the other hand is present at the beginning but is eventually consumed by the end of the reaction. So yes, a catalyst will appear on the left side towards the beginning but shifts to the right at the end.
