One of the key features of an enzyme which is used as a catalyst is that it is not used up in the reaction. Therefore, it is not in the overall reaction.

Enzymes provide an alternative pathway for the reaction to occur faster. They lower the activation energy, but the change in Enthalpy and Gibbs free energy stays the same because they are state properties independent of the pathway.

A catalyst works by decreasing a reactions activation energy so the reaction can take place at a quicker rate. Enzymes are an example of a catalyst. However, not all enzymes speed up reactions, some inhibit/slow down reactions.

Catalysts and enzymes work by decreasing the activation energy by lowering the free energy of the transition state. Thus, the reaction has smaller required activation energy and progresses faster.

Enzymes are really important to study and learn about because of how they are able to function without altering chemical equilibrium or being consumed. They are used as a great resource to speed up processes and reactions in chemistry.

It's also worth mentioning that enzymes are not just catalytic proteins. They can actually also be made from RNA strands, which are known as ribozymes, and also allow certain biological reactions in the cell to occur.

An enzyme is not involved in the chemical reaction and instead just brings down its activation energy. For zero order rxns, all of the enzymes can be saturated (used up) in a reaction that adding more reactant actually doesn't change the rate of the rxn.
