Heterogeneous catalyst

Postby smurphy1D » Sat Mar 14, 2020 7:02 am

If the catalyst is a solid, in lecture it was said that the reactants sit on top and are adsorbed, does this mean the solution is literally a liquid on top of the solid or are they just in a container with each other?

adsorption refers to the physical contact of reactants with the surface of a catalyst in a different state
and it is when reactants sit on the surface of a catalyst versus absorption which is when the reactant breaches the surface of the catalyst
therefore I would interpret it as being a liquid on top of a solid

Absorption is different from adsorption. In adsorption, the reactants sit on the surface of the catalyst. So thus, I'd believe you'd visualize it as liquid reactants in a pool on top of a solid or gas surrounding the surface of the solid.

What does an heterogeneous catalyst mean?
