catalysts

Postby Mallika Singh 1G » Sat Mar 14, 2020 5:43 pm

In one of the homework questions, i believe 7.17, one of the main concepts was that a catalyst that only affects the rate of one step of the reaction , has no effect on the whole rate of the reaction, overall. is my takeaway correct?

The catalyst does have an effect on the whole reaction (the forward and reverse rate equally). If you think of it in terms of the energy profile diagrams, the Ea is lowered for both the forward and reverse reactions (essentially if you lower the Ea for the forward rxn, you are also lowering the Ea for the reverse rxn). It increase the rate of the rxn by creating a new pathway.

I think it's that a catalyst directly affects one step of a reaction, but has an effect on the entire reaction as a whole.

The catalyst affect the reaction both forward and backwards and it is not used up in the reaction.

The catalyst would have an effect in whichever step it was involved in. It would affect both the forwards and reverse rate.
