Homework Problem 15.3 Part C

Part C asks what the unique rate of the reaction is. What does unique rate of reaction mean?

Unique rate is calculated by dividing the rate of a species by its stoichiometric coefficient

It's the rate that's unique to that reaction, separate from the coefficients you multiply to get to the reaction rates with regards to species in the reaction.

Note that the unique rate is the rate of formation, and the rate of formation for reactants is negative (because reactants are consumed in the reaction). Therefore, we must put a negative sign in front of the reactant's rate of formation to give it a positive value that equals the positive rate of formation of products.

The unique rate is just the basic rate of reaction. When you multiply a coefficient of a reactant by the unique rate, you get the rate of reaction of that compound.

The unique reaction rate occurs per one mole of the reactant. In this case, you divide by 2 since the stoichiometric coefficient of NO2 is 2.
