Activated Complex vs. Transition State

Postby Emily Warda 2L » Sun Mar 18, 2018 1:26 am

Are the terms “activated complex” and “transition state” exactly synonymous and interchangeable?

To my understanding, the activated complex is referring to all possible intermediate molecules. The transition state is the intermediate with highest potential energy.

The transition state represents only the highest potential energy configuration of atoms while the activated complex is the possible configurations of those atoms that are close to the transition state
