determining order of reaction

Postby JosephineF » Sat Mar 07, 2020 1:04 pm

Will we always be given the order of the reaction because it has to be determined experimentally?

I believe we will not always be given the order of the reaction, but you can tell by looking at graphs of ln[A] vs time, 1/[A] vs time, and [A] vs time. The graph that is a linear line indicates the order of that reaction

if there is no information given to determine the rate order, then the orders should be given. However it is possible for us to be asked to determine the order of a reaction/reactant based on some data or graphs. For example we could be given an plot of lnK v time and asked to determine the order of the reactant.

Usually, graphs of k and t will be given for a reaction for us to find out its order.

Also, if you are given the elementary steps of a reaction, you may be able to determine the order of a reaction.

We should either be given the graph to figure it out or given the information for an experiment.

The order would either be given or you would given a plot of the concentration versus time in some manner from which you can figure out the order.
