Slow Step Determination

Postby Adam_Ventura_1H » Fri Mar 12, 2021 8:56 am

I was wondering if someone could explain how one would go about determining what step in a reaction is the slow step, or would it just normally be given? Thank you.

I believe the question will usually tell us which step is the slow step!

When using the pre-equilibrium approximation and there are three steps and the slow step is given, how do you know which fast step to assume is at equilibrium?

Hi, the slow step should be given. You can assume that the step before the slow step is in equilibrium:)

They will tell you which step is the slow step and which ones are fast.

It will usually be given to you in the problem.

It will usually be given in the problem. You may be given the rate law of the entire reaction which will be the same as the rate law for the slow step, and you can determine the slow step that way.
