Homogeneous Catalysts and Ozone
How do homogeneous catalysts play a role in the formation of ozone in the lower atmosphere?

Re: Homogeneous Catalysts and Ozone
Ozone is a relatively unstable molecule that constantly breaks down into O2 and O, with the presence of NO(as a catalyst)the process speeds up. Homogenous catalysts constantly interact with the reactant to form an intermediate substance, then interacts with another reactant to regenerate the original catalyst and forms product. NO reacts with O3 and is regenerated in the intermediate processes. In the presence of NO, the decomposition of ozone would be faster due to NO's catalytic nature.

Re: Homogeneous Catalysts and Ozone
•OH + CO → •HOCO
•HOCO + O2 → HO2• + CO2
HO2• + NO → •OH + NO2
NO2 + hν → NO + O• , λ<400 nm
O• + O2 → O3
If there is no sunlight available to break NO2, the production of ozone will stop.

Re: Homogeneous Catalysts and Ozone
Oxygen atoms can recombine to form oxygen molecules and if a free oxygen atom collides with an oxygen molecule, it forms the ozone. In these reactions, the atoms act as catalysts.

Re: Homogeneous Catalysts and Ozone
NO (g) acts as a catalyst in the formation of O3 (ozone) in the lower atmosphere. NO (g) from car exhaust combines with O2 (g) in the air to form NO2 (g). This then reacts with O (g) to form the final product of ozone. It is a homogeneous catalyst because it is in the same phase as the reactants.
