The class is graded on a point basis, out of 500 points. You can find more info on it on the syllabus.

i don't believe its a curve. He just gives people who earned a 50% in the class a C- and a regular scale for As, and Bs.

it says on the syllabus that the class does not use a curve. If you want, here's the link to the syllabus where you can read more about the grading/point system

Not curved, but if you get 250/500 points, you pass with a C-

so if like we get a 65% what grade would that be since a 50% is a C for the final grade?

My understanding is that there is no curve, but there will probably be a grade adjustment based on the class average. A curve would prohibit say, the bottom 10% of the class from passing, but an adjustment allows the entire class the opportunity to pass, no matter their rank in grade.

There's no curve for grades higher than a 70% I believe, then they just stay with the regular grade guidelines (70%~C, 80%~B, 90%~A), so I think 50-79% will range within C- to C+

Is it true that he will curve if the class finals average is too low?

There is no curve for the class however, 250/500 is a c- and the rest of the grades are based on a straight/regular scale.

You should just keep track of your points since the class is based off of a points system. If you didn't do so well on the midterm, you could make up the rest of the points based off of your final, Test #3, etc.

That's true! Just work hard to at least get 250 points so you can pass the class.

So will everyone between 50% and 73% all get a C- regardless of their actual percentage?

I was talking to a girl who took Chem 14A last spring and she said that Lavelle adds ten points at the end. I'm not sure if he adds ten points what you get on the final or to your total amount of points at the end though.

According to the syllabus, final grades won't be known until the class average is known at the end but there is no curve and a 50% is considered passing with a C-

I think that there is a slight curve at the end of the class, but there is no curve on individual assignments
