Does anyone know if we need to know about radicals for the midterm?

To be safe, you should know what they are. Radicals occur when there is a single unpaired electron, making it highly reactive.

Does that mean that groups 1A and 7A are all radical?

a radical is when a molecule has an unpaired electron, it will have an odd number of valence electrons
