I found that the textbook problems were super helpful!! They often get more complex than examples on sapling or in lecture so it really solidifies your understanding of the concepts. Also going to multiple Peer learning workshops is very helpful!

Doing the textbook problems is helpful because a lot of the questions on midterm 1 were the same or similar to the textbook. I would recommend the AV modules but I think Lavelle might've said he wasn't posting any more :( It may also help to watch outside videos so the concepts can be explained in a different way.

Textbook problems for sure! Mixing these working problems with studying concept notes from lecture really helps create a holistic understanding of the midterm questions where even if you aren't exactly sure you can use your understanding to choose the best possible answer.

In addition to doing textbook problems and attending Workshop sessions, I found it helpful to create a Quizlet to test myself on the conceptual information that Dr. Lavelle discusses during lecture. Best of luck on midterm 2!

I would say to do the textbook homework problems and attend the step up learning sessions. Don't wait until the last minute to do these questions, you should try to do these along with the lectures that pertain to the textbook problems. For me, it helps to reinforce my understanding of what Prof.Lavelle says in the lecture. Hope this kinda made sense and good luck!

Hey! For midterm 1, I read through the entire book section assigned for the topics covered on the midterm and took notes. Then, I went on zoom with a couple friends every night before I took the exam on Friday. We did the book problems and discussed them, read through the outline posted on Dr. Lavelle's website and talked over any other questions we had. Also, I went through each module (though I don't know if Dr. Lavelle will be making any more in the future). There are step-up sessions and stuff to that you can attend for more practice problems.

To study for the first midterm, I focused a bit more on the Sapling homework and the worksheets from the various chemistry workshops. If there was a particular topic I did not understand, I watched a couple short videos about it on Youtube and that really helped! Don't give up yet, I'm sure you'll do great on the next midterm :)

Studying the lecture notes thoroughly, going to step-up sessions often, watching videos to clarify concepts, and of course the Sapling and textbook problems are important for me to do!

I would say run through textbook chapter, lecture, textbook problems, sapling, and step up in this order to reinforce concepts before and after lecture.

In my opinion the textbook problems were much harder than the midterm so it was great practice

I would suggest looking over your notes on a regular basis and ensuring that you understand the homework problems. Closer to the midterm, it would help to look over the textbook problems. I found that the textbook problems were pretty similar to the questions on the last midterm

I got a pretty decent score on midterm 1, and what really helped me were the textbook problems in addition to the UA step-up sessions. Our UAs are so nice and smart, and will happily help anyone that has any questions. Furthermore, they also give out practice worksheets during these sessions, and a lot of the questions on those review sheets were similar to the ones on the midterm.

I have a lot of friends who took this class before me, and what helped them succeed the most was meeting with other students to study together. I know of course we can't exactly do that with the pandemic going on, but I have seen many posts about having virtual study groups! Just search "study group" here on Chemistry Community, and I'm sure some good threads will show up. I always think material is easier to digest when you can actually talk it out with someone who is also in the same position as you. Best of luck on midterm 2 and the rest of this quarter!

Hi! For me, the workshops were the most helpful. It's a great way to test your knowledge when you go, and also have some problems to practice before the midterm! It's a win-win! Also, I did all the textbook problems and that really helps as well. In my opinion, practice is the best way to study for chem. Chem problems can be presented in a few different ways per topic/equation, so being able to recognize all these different ways by practicing helps save you in the end. In addition, I handwrite my notes so I typed them up in my own words, which really helped me solidify the concepts. Hope this helps! I'm sure you'll do awesome on the next midterm!

Step-up sessions have been really helpful for me! It's especially useful for understanding the basics before moving on to more complex problems. At each session the UA's have pre-made exam-like questions that are relevant to the content for week, and they go over how to do them step by step. They also allow you to interrupt to ask any questions you want along the way. I found it to be great practice for the last midterm.

Hi! I also did not do too well on Midterm 1. Some things I'm doing differently for midterm 2 are really making sure I learn as I go along, for example, when new material started to be introduced, I printed out periodic tables and made one for the trends, one of the lewis dot structures, one of the electron configurations. Its pretty painstaking but it was good basic memorization and has seemed to help me so far.

I found the text book problems, step up sessions, and workshops so helpful because you get to see most of the types of questions that will be asked on the midterm.

I didn't do as well as I wanted to either on the midterm, but I thought that really studying and understanding the homework problems helped a lot. There were problems on the midterm that I knew I would not have understood if I didn't encounter a similar problem in the homework!

I think the textbook problems are really helpful, especially since they usually seem more challenging - it makes the homework easier to comprehend as well!
