How to study for class
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone relies on the textbook more to learn content rather than the lectures. Since the lectures are recorded, it's sometimes really hard for me to get them going especially as an international student with time difference. If so, any tips?

Hello, I only use the textbook for practice problems, but those are very helpful. To help understand concepts, I like to watch Youtube videos to hear other people teaching me. I really like The Organic Chemistry Tutor, Professor Dave Explains, and CrashCourse.

Re: How to study for class
I have found that the textbook simply gives too much information and the lectures are more to the point of what we need to know. It is also too time consuming to try to learn from the book and from the lectures, so I typically watch lectures and either check khan academy or consult the book if I am confused on a topic.

Re: How to study for class
I would suggest using the textbook only for practice problems. Then going to the step-up sessions to get a bette tinder standing of the topic.

I think it helps to watch the lectures and then read through the textbook, so that you know what you do and do not have to know. The textbook has a lot of information, but we are not required to learn all of it.

Re: How to study for class
Personally, reading the textbook has helped me understand the details of specific concepts since it goes into depth on certain topics. I've found that it helps to watch the lectures first to understand the basics on a topic and then reading about the topic in the textbook. Definitely do the textbook problems too!
Re: How to study for class
I think looking at previous exams and materials from before help as well as putting a time limit on is also helpful.

Hi! I personally like to review by reading the textbook. I find the examples helpful and reading solidifies my understanding of the content. However, I think it’s important to also make sure to watch all the lectures at least once and complete all the homework assigned.

I try to go by the outline that he has. So based on the topics we’re supposed to be learning or must master, I try to watch videos from youtube that go over them (mostly because i’m a visual learner and most youtube videos just go straight to the point.) When it comes to studying for the midterm, I make sure to do the textbook problems and I feel like if you can nail those problems then you should be fine.

Re: How to study for class
For this last midterm, I found it really helpful to review the past lectures and to write down what was most important in each lecture on a separate piece of paper. I also believe that the textbook problems and the sapling homework problems have been really useful when studying for these tests.

I watch out for conceptual details from lecture, and read through the textbook to solidify them and find the textbook problems to be really helpful since they are worded similarly to the exams.

Re: How to study for class
As with the consensus here, the textbook problems are very helpful, though the textbook can be a bit greater in scale at times. Lavelle's lectures and videos online can be greatly helpful in understanding the concepts, while the textbook problems help with their application.
Re: How to study for class
Both textbook and sapling problems are really helpful. I usually go through the solutions for the sapling problems to make sure I know why and how I got each answer

Re: How to study for class
I find that going over the lecture notes and re-explaining the concepts to myself in my head are beneficial, as well as doing the outline homework. I only do the questions, I don't read the textbook though because I am very much a visual learner.

Re: How to study for class
I use the textbook for textbook problems mostly. I learn better when someone is explaining it rather than reading, so if I get stuck, I'll watch a youtube video on it to clarify.

I do the textbook problems for extra help and attend the step-up sessions. I also like to watch The Organic Chemistry Tutor sometimes.

I try to keep a schedule of when to watch lectures, then from there I do practice problems from the textbook. Workshops also really help and so do videos on youtube!

Most people have said that textbook problems are a big help when studying for exams, so I would for sure go with that. Also, watching review videos on YouTube always helps too :)

Hi! I find the extra textbook problems and sapling to be the best as far as simulating test questions, and then I try to find khan academy videos for concepts that I do not understand fully.

I find I learn the material the best by doing a lot of practice problems. Kahn Academy has some practice problems for chem, which I like because they give feedback right away

Re: How to study for class
I am wondering if anyone has found a good way to study conceptual topics? I always find myself second guessing myself on the exam questions that are more concept based rather than numerical or calculation based.

Re: How to study for class
I feel like I rely on both the textbook and lectures for learning because lectures give a good general overview on the topic and the textbook helps clarify any questions I have (even though I agree the textbook can be really dense in material sometimes). I also end up learning about a lot of things I didn't know about previously through doing textbook problems so it helps a lot to go through them. Also, UA sessions are great for giving helpful tips and pointers when it comes to problem-solving and concepts you need to know so I recommend going to some!

Watching YouTube videos and going to TA review sessions are really helpful in reviewing for the class!

I recommend the textbook for the practice problems, as well as UA sessions/worksheets

Re: How to study for class
I mainly try to use the textbook when I'm unsure about a certain topic in lecture, because it often goes into more detail and nuance. I also like to use it for practice problems as a kind of benchmark to see if I am retaining and comprehending the information.

Re: How to study for class
I watch the lectures to get a general idea of the concepts and then do the textbook problems to practice. If I don't udnerstand something, I'll usually try reading about it from the textbook or watching youtube videos.
Re: How to study for class
I also have similar problems. My problem is that the lectures sometimes takes a long time to load and it often stops for loading. I am really grateful to see so many recommendations on learning resources.

Re: How to study for class
The textbook pretty much covers everything you need to know, but the lectures put everything into context and Dr. Lavelle explains everything in an easier to understand way. I recommend completing the readings and textbook questions before lecture so that the lecture consolidates your understanding of the material.
