Studying for Final Exam
Hi there,
Out of curiosity, how will you be studying for this final exam? What methods/strategies do you use when studying for the chem final? I study a lot but I often lack organization and efficiency when doing so. Thanks for the help!

Re: Studying for Final Exam
I recommend doing practice problems from the book (redoing ones you weren't 100% confident with, making sure you're familiar with the steps to solve and the concepts behind them).
Also, brushing up on topics that you felt weak with through YouTube videos has helped me a lot. (The Organic Chemistry Tutor is my savior)

Re: Studying for Final Exam
Hello there! For the final I will be completing the textbook practice problems and watching YouTube videos to review the concepts I need help with. I will also be attending as much UA sessions/workshops as I can. In Dr. Lavelle's recent email he mentioned that he is preparing over 30 hours of review sessions for week 10, so I'm definitely going to try my best to attend as many as I can, since they will most likely be reviewing topics from the very beginning!

Re: Studying for Final Exam
I'll be doing the rest of the textbook problems assigned to us to practice for the new topics, then I'll reread my notes and redo some of the problems I struggled with before! I will also try to attend as many workshops as possible and will definitely attend the review sessions that Dr. Lavelle is going to hold during week 10.

Hi! The UA workshops have really been helpful with explaining the topics that I find confusing, so I like to attend as many as I can. Furthermore, I also plan on reviewing all of the textbook problems, while also reviewing all of my notes and watching the Organic Chemistry Tutor for a better understanding. Good luck on your studies!!!

I'm going to solve the textbook problems assigned to us, and I'm probably going to attend some workshops as well throughout weeks 9 and 10 to avoid cramming.

Redoing book problems! Also maybe doing some of the UA worksheets, since everyone also really likes those problems as well.

Hi! Will there be UA sessions to review previous content (content from MT1 and MT2) to help review for the final? Or will the UA sessions continue to review new content up until the final?

I’m redoing all of the textbook problems and completing the ones assigned to us in our outlines. I’m also attending UA workshops to practice with their worksheets.

Re: Studying for Final Exam
I would 100% start taking notes on the book. For me, it is the best way to comprehend the concepts because I'm a more visual learner. Another thing that's helped me a lot is making a study guide from the outline a couple days before the exam. It's the best way to refresh the info you got from the book. And as other people have said, book problems always help!

I like to watch videos on youtube that give examples as well as look over the textbook problems. There's also quizlet flash cards that help with review.

Re: Studying for Final Exam
Look for existing Quizlets! Since this class has been around for a bit, it more than likely has a few pre-made review flashcard sets. Also, I will be reviewing the hw and text-book questions--and watching YouTube vids for topics that I struggle with.
Re: Studying for Final Exam
A week before I am going to start reviewing the old material and then slowly work my way to the new material by doing the practice problems.

I'm definitely going to try to look through the book again as well as redoing the practice problems because some questions always seem to pop up on the test. I also am going to try to go to as many step up and review sessions as I can so I can get a stronger understanding of the material. I would also recommend looking at YouTube videos of topics you may not understand as well so you can gain a different perspective on the material.

Besides doing the textbook problems, I've heard reading the textbook is super helpful because it goes really in-depth on the information so I'm going to be trying that

I'm going to re-do all the practice problems and go through my textbook notes again as well as look at the Sapling problems. I'll also be attending some of the review sessions during some step-up sessions in addition to looking at lectures for further clarification.

Hi! I'll definitely be reviewing the modules from the beginning of the quarter and looking over my notes from lecture. As everyone else has been saying, I'll also go over textbook problems from each section. I think I'll try to do at least a few questions from each outline!! Speaking of which, the outline will probably be very helpful as a guide for the final as well. Best of luck!

Re: Studying for Final Exam
My biggest tip is: Do ALL the textbook problems and make sure understand all of them!!! There were SO many on the last midterm!! the textbook problems I find can be a little bit more difficult than the problems on the tests/examples he shows in class, so if you understand how to do them then you definitely understand the concept

Re: Studying for Final Exam
I admittingly crammed for a lot of the midterms before, and I found doing all textbook problems helped me a lot! If you are confused about a concept itself, do the example problems in the textbook before you do the questions at the end of each topic. The sapling questions haven't helped me much, but they're still a good visualizer for the lewis structures and certain conceptual questions.

I like going over the problems we have been doing on Sapling because I find that they are similar in difficulty to the questions we've seen on the first two exams. I also suggest going over notes as well as textbook problems.

Re: Studying for Final Exam
Honestly I did not do so well on midterm 2 compared to midterm 1, so I will be reviewing those topics twice as much as the topics from midterm 1. I say strengthen what you already know, but create flash cards and do practice problems for topics that are a little more troubling. Also, there are a lot of great videos online that break down our topics even more.

I like going over the Sapling problems, and looking at the explanations for the solutions so you get the full picture of the process of solving that problem. It’s a great way to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

Re: Studying for Final Exam
I'll make sure I get through all the textbook problems for this unit, and then go back and review all the Sapling homework for a good outline of problems. I'll also go back and do most of the textbook problems from previous units if I can, and go through workshop problems.

Re: Studying for Final Exam
In addition to redoing the textbook problems and reviewing UA worksheets, I'm planning to make flashcards from my notes to test myself on the conceptual information. Testing myself helps me identify the topics I'm not as confident about so I know to study those more. I'm also planning to go through the learning objectives listed under the Outlines on Dr. Lavelle's website to make sure I'm studying everything we're expected to know. Best of luck on the final! :)

Re: Studying for Final Exam
Hi! I also tend to lack organization while studying, so I'm going to attend lots of review sessions for this final so that the studying is structured for me! I also plan on completing all the textbook questions before the final, which is a lot of work, but has proven to be worth it on the two midterms. I think it's super important to take breaks and reward yourself while studying. Don't forget to drink water and keep yourself fueled as you work so that your brain can function at its best!

Re: Studying for Final Exam
Definitely going to do the textbooks problems since they seem to help me master the concepts more than the sapling hw. But Lavelle has a bunch of review sessions planned which I highly appreciate and will most likely be attending. Besides that, I'm just trying to go over anything and kind of have it nailed down. (Lowkey taking notes and writing down everybody's studying tips because I feel like I suck at studying on my own lol)

Doing practice problems from the textbook (especially the ones specified in the outlines) and attending UA sessions has been the most helpful for me. I would also recommend going to the review sessions throughout this week on the topics you may be struggling in!

I'm going to go over textbook problems on the unit outlines, starting with newer material and working backward. I'm also definitely going to review sessions with UAs this week. If it helps you, try and make a schedule to plan out how you will be studying each day for the final. It makes your studying more organized and can help you measure your progress/feel like you're getting somewhere :)

I'm going to try to review all the textbook questions we've done throughout the quarter to get more practice. I'll probably go through the outlines and make sure I understand the bullet points, and then I'll read through my textbook and lecture notes to hopefully refresh the material. I'm planning on going to one review session per topic, but if I can't I'll go to the ones that cover the material I struggled with a little more!

Re: Studying for Final Exam
I would recommend first going over your notes, highlighting the most important concepts and formula. After you have reviewed the material, I would recommend doing as much practice problems as possible. You can do the problems assigned in the textbook as Dr. Lavelle has said that some of them may be in the final exam.
If some concepts are not clear to you, or you can't memorize them, try watching youtube videos as they will give you a different view/explanation that could work for you.

Re: Studying for Final Exam
Hi. Thanks everyone for all of their tips. I find it really helpful to go over the sapling hw questions and check for concepts that I do not understand as well. The textbook problems are also quite helpful with checking my understanding. I have also been talking through some concepts with other students because I find it really helpful to determine my own understanding by trying to teach the material to someone else. Good luck everyone!

Most of my studying will be doing textbook problems listed in the outlines! Judging from the two midterms, you can probably expect questions on the finals to be extremely similar to the textbook. The review sessions happening this week will be really helpful towards reviewing old topics.

I'm going to do most of my studying by practicing textbook problems. The one thing I will suggest is to not overwork yourself! As hard as it may seem to do because our grades are on the line, it's important to take breaks. Stay safe everyone.

Hi! I'm going to be studying by rewriting/organizing my notes! I don't know if this works for everybody, but for me, restructuring my notes and going over them again is really helpful for me. I also am re-watching all of the lectures again just to make sure I didn't miss any little details that might be important (I'm re-watching them at two times speed). I think most people are redoing practice problems, so that should also be helpful!
