Re: Anxiety
Take a breather. If you are anxious with regards to the final (as I am sure most of us are), I would recommend taking a few moments to write down what you do know and what you don't know. I personally like to take the time to go through each learning objective on all of the outlines and make note of my knowledge on each of those bullet points. Also, if you feel comfortable with one topic, then I would recommend putting less of your energy practicing questions for that topic and instead focus your energy on concepts that may seem a bit newer to you. Hope this helps! You're going to do great!

Hey, just a couple of more days left! We've got this. I try to take breaks and limit my chemistry studying to 1 hour periods at a time. That way you keep yourself from being consumed from chemistry. Taking deep breaths, going on walks, and eating are great ways to take your mind off!

Re: Anxiety
I have been dealing with my anxious thoughts by grounding myself. In regards to this final, we still have a few days. I have been planning out my time to study so I do not get to overloaded. Try not to this class overwhelm your time. Take breaks often. Do other activities. And all you can do is try your best. We're on the home stretch, and I know that you've got this!
Re: Anxiety
It can get overwhelming when you spend hours focusing on one course. just like a previous person mentioned, try working in increments of 1 hour with breaks in between. Try changing your scenery if you can. Remember to take breaks, eat snacks, and move away from the screen periodically. We're almost at the end now so stay strong, we'll soon have some well deserved time off!

Re: Anxiety
I know it's generic but creating a list of things to do whether topics to go over, or chores around the house really help make you feel like you're getting something done. I for one have been very overwhelmed with the amount of hours of chem review that I could go to so I feel like there's just too much for me to get anything done. ALSO study using the POMODORO technique. Just look it up ;)

Anxiety is normal. All of us want to do well and push ourselves to new limits. But I find that while trying to do well, I often forget the importance of taking breaks. It is crucial to step away from what you have been doing. As mentioned above a change of scenery really helps a lot!
All the best! You got this!!

Re: Anxiety
EXCERCISE! I know you have seen Lavelle advocate for this, but it is super important and helpful. Exercising releases feel-good endorphins that help ease anxiety. It also helps your brain study and retain information...the more oxygen and blood that the brain gets, the better it will perform. Getting away from studying for a bit is just another bonus lol.

Re: Anxiety
Yeah dealing with test anxiety is hard. However, I've learned that studying too much causes me to tire myself out mentally more and I now try to balance between relaxing and studying. Also just doing things for self-care, such as eating enough everyday; having a moment to yourself to do what you enjoy; or even exercising are all different ways to calm your nerves

I like to listen to mellow music while I study! I also like to remind myself that it'll be over with soon, and since the final is early on in the week, I'll have time to study for other classes throughout the week without worrying about chem

I'm feeling really anxious about the test. I know I understand the concepts but I'm not very good under a time crunch and get frustrated really fast so I'm trying to work on not getting nervous while taking the test and just doing the best I can on homework problems, textbook problems, and anything else that'll help. You got this though, don't stress too much! And make sure to rest and eat well!!

I don't know, because no matter how much or how hard I study I have not gotten the grades I wanted on the previous midterms. So the standards aren't very high, but I know I am doing my best and there is not much else I can do.

Study for a bit, then take a short break (repeat)! I have bad habits with last minute cramming, but it honestly just gives me more anxiety. I've been trying to go exercise more, since it takes my mind off studying for a bit.

I have definitely found that I am slightly more stressed than usual due to not getting out of the house as often. I have found going on a walk to be very helpful, both to reduce stress and to refresh my mind so I can get back to studying.

Personally I find it relaxing when I talk to my close friends! So whenever I take breaks I talk with them because it offers a temporary relief from anxieties and it also helps me not spiral into only thinking about myself and what I can do/ can't do and being in the company of others keeps my perspectives open if that makes sense

I think to myself — the worse case scenario is that I fail the class. If I do fail, I can use that as an opportunity to grow and improve my study habits even more for the future. So ruminating does nothing good; if you worry about something you experience the thing you feared twice. So the only productive thing to do is to solidify my understanding of the material and work hard. This usually calms me down.

Re: Anxiety
I have definitely had a lot of anxiety associated with this class, but I am honestly just a very anxious person in general. What really helped me is preparing VERY thoroughly for midterms/final. Reviewing the material over and over makes me feel like I am less likely to make careless mistakes on the test. I also like studying with a friend who always gives me a lot of reassurance before tests! Even though studying weirdly relieves my anxiety, taking breaks is a must too. I try to spread out my studying so I don't feel too rushed or overwhelmed. If I'm feeling too stressed, I like to just call it a day and pick up where I left off the next day.

I have super bad anxiety, especially related to this class. I find that taking breaks and studying a bit every day helps to relieve it for sure! :) Honestly, it gets very rough around midterms/final exams so we gotta persevere through this, and the only way to is through minimal studying that won't cause any burnout!

I definitely have a lot of anxiety when it comes to test taking in general but especially for this class this quarter. One thing that really helps me deal with my anxiety is to get a good night's sleep. It can often feel like there is so much to do that you do not have enough time to sleep but rest is incredibly important and allows you to be more productive in the long run. I find that the later it gets into the night the more stressed I get but everything always seems simpler in the morning! I know this is much easier said than done but remember that taking care of yourself will allow you to get more out of your classes and life in general :)

Re: Anxiety
I know this class can be pretty stressful given its strict grade scale and dense topics but just remember how far you've come! I've been reminding myself that it's almost the end of the quarter and that we have worked hard learning and interpreting the material presented to us, even in the remote format which inevitably makes engaging learning more challenging. You're doing amazing and we're almost to the finish line!

This probably isn't the best advice but I literally just study to the point I am no longer nervous. I kinda just do as many practice problems as I can and it just makes more confident in doing chemistry problems in regards to future exams.

It is also nice to check off what you've finished. I would suggest cleaning your work area, switching your work environment once in a while, and making sure to take breaks! It is good to grab a snack, exercise, or do a fun activity to take your mind off chemistry for a little bit.

This class does cause a lot of stress especially given how hard it is to get an A, but it’s best to take breaks and try and pace yourself. It made a huge difference for me when I stopped cramming for studying the night before and instead did textbook problems throughout the week.

I use this app called grades where you can type in each component to your grade and it'll calculate what you need on each to achieve your target grade. This has helped so much as I realistically know exactly what I need to reach my goals, I highly recommend.

I find that I get more anxious when I set a specific goal for the day. I know it helps a lot of people stay organized, but looking and planning things like that ahead of time might cause more anxiety as you feel more pressure to complete the task. Instead, I would recommend to incorporate a study routine into you everyday; set 30 minutes aside a day to review the material you learned that day, and take it from there! :)

I make an EXTENSIVE plan like a week ahead of each midterm/final so that there's no added stress from me not knowing what I have to do. I also try really hard to stick to my schedule so that I know I'll be able to study everything I need to! Something that also really helps me is studying with friends! It's a lot less stressful when you're working with someone else and it's an easy way to hold yourself accountable!

Also take a break!! Make midweek spontaneous beach trips normal, find something fun to look forward to. My roommates and I go out for Icecream on a Tuesday night just because its a Tuesday.

Reading this thread has helped me realize just how common this problem is. I have been trying to subdue anxiety for several years now and it has been at its all time high ever since I stopped exercising as much. Although I cannot say exercising completely cured my anxiety in the past, I can say it allowed me to be more productive academically because I wasn't trapped in my negative thoughts.

I also dealt with a lot of anxiety recently going into this first midterm. I willingly put less effort into my other classes just to prioritize studying. I will say one thing I do not regret is the fact I studied early, probably the earliest I ever started prepping for an exam. Doing so allowed me enough time to digest everything since this is a pretty fast paced course to me. It also allowed me to reach out for the right resources during UA sessions and Office hours. Good thing is that this is not an exclusive feeling, everyone has it, and if they tell you otherwise they would be lying. It all depends on great your time management is. Next time around however, I know to evenly space out my other classes along with my studying. Sometimes over studying can be detrimental as you are not allowing yourself to regroup and breathe for a moment. Studying is key, but so is mental safety and sleep!

Gah, as someone who struggles from anxiety I seriously understand what you’re going through. I definitely do activities that try and take my mind off of chem so I don’t too fixated on what I have to do, that way the stress doesn’t build up. Please take care of yourselves!

Re: Anxiety
I think that I have a hard time with my anxiety because when I get anxious I feel as if I can't work. I haven't exactly figured out what helps come my anxiety so I had a hard time taking the exam because my anxiety was raging.

Honestly my mom asked me the same thing and its just about keeping an open mind for me I guess. If I need to cry about it, I just gotta do it haha.
Re: Anxiety
My coping mechanisms aren't particularly the best...but I usually cope by not acknowledging my anxiety and the incessant amount of fears, and just start working. Usually, it resolves itself after I've completed whatever I was worried about.

Re: Anxiety
Hi! For me, I try to take a step back from academics whenever I'm stressed and either take some me time or spend time with friends to clear my mind and re-energize me. Sometimes we need to take a break and relax. So, I think you should try to prioritize you mental and physical health because that's more important than academics in the long run!

Re: Anxiety
Recently I attended a mindfulness class/session thing and I learned a bunch of techniques to deal with test-anxiety. What I found to be really helpful is that whenever I am about to take a midterm or exam, I try to visualize where I am standing. Like focus on the ground that your feet are on or the spot on the chair where your back is touching. Personally, this has been a great tool in calming my nerves and I find myself even doing it outside of class. It honestly sounds weird as I probably didn't do the best job of describing it, but you should give it a try!!

Re: Anxiety
With this class, I try to spread out my studying as much as possible. I do one topic a day so I don't get too overwhelmed and try to do practice problems. Mostly just remember that chemistry is a difficult subject, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it!

Re: Anxiety
Thank all of you guys for the advice, it was really helpful and I really needed to hear some of these things. Hope you all have a great winter break and get a grade you're happy with:)
Re: Anxiety
I just took the final this morning which definitely increased my anxiety levels, but overall I was able to manage the coursework in this class. I have horrible time-management skills so I had to stick to a strict schedule.

Re: Anxiety
Hi! I hope you're doing better now that the final is over :). I've found it's really hard to find a good school/life balance now that classes are in person and expectations are far more demanding. I have a lot of anxiety right now as everything is so overwhelming and i've found what helps me best is taking a breather, stepping outside and reaching out for help once i've recharged. Don't completely avoid the school work but make sure you're energized and giving yourself the time you need to be healthy. And finally, remember it's okay to not always perform well. You're health and happiness are genuinely the most important right now and what's most important is that you're enjoying your time at college and allowing yourself the space to grow and learn.

I’ve told myself that it is what it is, at the end of the day I tried my best and I don’t want my chemistry grade to make me feel some type of way
