Winter Break
Does anyone have any tips on retaining the information we learned from 14A through to 14B? I know that I'll definitely be forgetting some things since we have winter break coming up.

Re: Winter Break
I also normally have issues with memory retention over breaks, so I definitely feel you there! My suggestion would be to randomly pick problems out of the outlines and (re)do them just to give yourself a refresher? Or take a textbook problem and change some things about it and try to answer it after that? I'd love to hear any suggestions anyone else has, though!

Re: Winter Break
Yes I think I will forget some of the material to; however, what I am going to try to do is review the test books and maybe re do some of the textbooks problems throughout the break.

Re: Winter Break
I think I'm going to make flashcards on the main terms and topics because writing them down helps me retain things better. I feel like that requires the least brainpower during a break, because I don't think I will have the motivation to do practice problems.

Re: Winter Break
I made my own outline notes of each outline that we covered in class, and I'm probably going to just review them as often as I can to make sure that I retain all of the information! Also doing practice problems over break could help too. Personally, I am going to focus on acids and bases a little bit more since 14B picks up right where we left off in 14A.
Re: Winter Break
I think watching videos about the main concepts will be sufficient enough to maintain your knowledge about 14a.

Re: Winter Break
I think going over some of your notes to review the main concepts should be sufficient. you can always look back on them later if needed too

Re: Winter Break
I would suggest maybe a week before class starts up again start reviewing the content of 14A similarly to how you are studying for the final.

Re: Winter Break
I would make an outline highlighting only key concepts for each topic. It would be good to have 3-4 bulletpoints for each topic so you don't clutter your page. The concepts are probably the things that will reoccur in future classes, so I wouldn't spend time focusing on the little details.

Re: Winter Break
I am going to review my notes often over break just to make sure I remember the information because I have trouble remembering information over time as well. I will also maybe do some practice problems from the textbook to reinforce my knowledge.
Re: Winter Break
I always have this problem over breaks, usually what I try to do is either write up answers to a study guide provided by the teacher, or make my own study guide and answer all the questions, then when class is about to begin again I review this study guide and it usually comes back pretty quick since it is in a familiar and organized format.

Re: Winter Break
I would definitely keep your notes and save the outline to your computer with it worked out while you still remember the info so you can look back later.
Re: Winter Break
I created my own study guide for the final and will definitely be using that to look back on while in 14B.

I’ll be going over the outline to make sure I still understand them, and if I don’t, I’ll reread my notes for it and do some textbook problems!

Re: Winter Break
hi!
I find it best to keep my notebooks when it comes to a series-type class. However, I heard that you don't need to retain that much for the chem series?? could someone confirm/deny this?

Re: Winter Break
During the quarter I usually take pretty messy notes from lecture and the textbook, and over winter quarter I plan to rewrite my notes, or at least the essential concepts. This will help me stay refreshed on the material, and will also give me something to reference should I need to in 14B.

Re: Winter Break
In theory I would like to reread my study guide in the middle of break and then right before 14B starts which is not that ambitious on its own, but realistically I will be only be rereading it once right before it starts

I'm going to just flip through my 14a notebook occasionally, specifically on sections that were difficult for me in the class

Just reviewing topics I struggled on before 14b as well as making sure I read through my notes often.

I think doing practice problems and just watching some videos will be good over the break. Don't overload yourself, remember you are on break.

Re: Winter Break
Honestly doing the textbook problems really help and rewriting some notes as a refresher. I wouldn't worry too much during break since it's only a couple of weeks. Maybe some review videos right before week 1, but nothing too big.

Re: Winter Break
It best to reread your notes and redo practice problems in the textbook and worksheets! Also finding a study buddy to bounce off of helps a lot too!

Re: Winter Break
I am planning on going over the material from 14A a few days before 14B. Admittedly, I have been reluctant to do that in the past, but having a head start on any material at all before Week 1 is extremely helpful in the quarter system and saves a lot of stress later on.

Re: Winter Break
I usually try not to look at school too much during break but if I forget important concepts before class then I would just briefly review my notes and online videos on the topics that I forgot.

I’m sure Lavelle will touch base on some of the topics from 14A that we will need to know continuing into 14B at the start as he always starts with the fundamentals

Re: Winter Break
As somebody else mentioned above, while it is important to be prepared for 14B also remember to enjoy winter break and relax a little so we can all come back to 14B refreshed and rested. :) Congrats everyone for making it through the quarter!

Re: Winter Break
I might go over lecture notes and sapling problems once or twice, but I'm sure it won't be difficult to review something I need to know from 14a.

Personally, I'm not going to try to actively study over the break, but I might reread the midterm and final review sessions like a day or two before break ends to try and refresh myself.

I usually like to just read over my notes for a few days prior to beginning a class after a long break. I'll probably be going over my outline notes!

I would review my notes to help remember what we had learned and do simple problems to make sure I still remember how to do them.

Re: Winter Break
I might rewatch the video modules from some of the earlier concepts in 14A because I feel like I won't retain that information as well since we learned it a while ago (although, knowing me, I'll likely forget to do that). Other than that, I'll probably just keep my 14A notebook handy as we start 14B.

I assume that Professor Lavelle will review most of the Chem 14a material in Chem 14b, similar to how he reviewed high school material during Chem 14a.

Re: Winter Break
I'm personally going to take this winter break to relax, especially after a tough quarter. However, I will read over my notes again closer to the beginning of the winter quarter. It might also help to review the textbook problems if you want more practice review.

Re: Winter Break
I would recommend reviewing the weekly graded sapling homework a little bit each day. Save some of your notes as well so you can review them if you come across a related 14B topic and want to brush up.

Re: Winter Break
I think just looking through lecture notes and reviewing some textbook questions would be helpful.
