Study music

Postby Jade Lastra 3B » Sat Dec 12, 2020 3:00 pm

Typically I like to study by playing music but I've now started to find myself getting distracted by that, but I definitely need some background noise to focus on my work. I like using those pomodoro technique videos on youtube, but I was wondering if there's any other methods or things you guys use to help keep focused while working.

I listen to a lot of classical music for studying and doing work. Study's tend to say it's conducive to a good working environment. Also, apparently listening to new and different songs is beneficial!

I also use the Pomodoro method, but sometimes I change it so I work in 30-40 minute intervals since the 5min break is too short for me. For background noise, I recommend using Noisli if music is too distracting for you. Recently I've been listening to calm video game/Nintendo music like the Animal Crossing BGM and it's dynamic enough so that I stay awake, but calm enough that I don't get distracted. There's a lot of different study playlists on Youtube to browse through :)

I usually just search studying or reading music on Spotify (and it's most likely on other streaming services too) and a lot of good playlists come up that help me stay focused.

Usually, just to spice up my studying, I go on YouTube and listen to slowed/reverb music since its calmer and I can totally hum along as I do my work.

this might just be me but I actually like listening to songs with words in them. Usually I turn them up loud enough where it just becomes background noise and I don't get distracted but it sounds counterintuitive.

If I have an essay to crank out, I put on some Mario Kart music and go ham. For any other occasion, I prefer Studio Ghibli music on youtube or some lo-fi beats. I find words to be kind of distracting when reading

I look up lo-fi music on Spotify, but sometimes when I'm in the mood to listen to music with lyrics I play whatever I'm feeling on a low volume so I don't get as distracted by the lyrics. Also, when I have to stay up late I like to listen to powerful and upbeat music to keep myself awake.

I like listening to classic rock or punk rock while doing homework because half the time I can't understand the lyrics anyway, and the fast guitar keeps me awake. I recommend any of ZZ Top's early albums or All Time Low! I also like listen to video game soundtracks, like anything from Legend of Zelda or Final Fantasy is usually good if you want something without lyrics.

I think any music that is on the calm side and with no lyrics/words would definitely help. I like using the ambient music playlists on youtube (get u-block origin so you aren't bombarded by ads).

Playing my own music usually results in me singing along or getting distracted, so if I really need to focus I look up any soft instrumental playlist on spotify and just press shuffle. I also have found that bossa nova music really helps me feel relaxed and study better, you could probably find some mixes of that on youtube or any streaming service.

Sometimes my study music varies
If i'm in a pure study mode it usually is hip hop beats/ lo fi music / basically music with no lyrics
If I'm a little distracted and I need help focusing , I put more chaotic music like the mario kart soundtrack
and the middle option is slowed down music of my favorite songs / more relaxing songs of my favorite artists

This sounds like an odd recommendation, but the Mario Kart Study Playlist on Spotify is my go to! Video game music helps with my concentration a lot and I would suggest listening to it if you find yourself checking your phone every 5 minutes while studying. I'm sure there's some science behind it :")

Ok this is going to sound really weird but honestly it helped me stay focused and accountable if you go on youtube and search, "study with me real-time" there's a bunch of people that post videos of them studying and some have light music playing (like jazz or instrumental) , others are only with background noise and my personal favorites have both. And the videos range from 1 to 5 hrs its amazing, you don't have to look at them studying but keep it playing on an open tab, and its like studying with a friend.

I find that I like different kinds of music for the place I am in my study session. If I am just starting out, I definitely listen to a lot more pump-up type music, maybe Empire State of Mind. Then I go to more laid back music, like Fleet Foxes. Eventually I turn the music off when I am deeply concentrating on the schoolwork.

I tried pavloving myself to this one soundtrack (I forgot the name but it was an instrumental that was looped for an hour) so that I could be 100% focused during the hour because I work suuuuper slow and adding distractions too and it kind of worked o.o

Before I study, I love to play a upbeat song that will get me motivated to study, and then while I am studying I look up "background music for studying" on YouTube and choose one of those videos to help me stay focused.

I agree with lots of people that listening to music without lyrics can make studying very easy! My favorite album to listen to while studying is Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It won't be for everyone but I find it so conducive to focus.

I really like to listen to classical piano when studying for harder topics as it doesn't have lyrics but if I'm just working on normal assignments then I like to listen to a lot of contemporary music that I personally enjoy.

For study music, I tend to switch it up a lot depending on the time of day and the mood Im in. So if the homework or studying is not urgent or it is night time then I will tend to play Lofi music or indie pop music. But if i am in a rush and need to get it done or its morning or the afternoon I will play more upbeat R&B or faster-paced music.

Listening to atmospheric music is usually the most effective for me. One playlist/podcast I really like on spotify is the "Oldies playing in a...", they have lots of different tracks each with a different theme. Theres ones where it sounds like you're listening to an old vinyl during a raining day and other that sounds like the streets of Paris while you're at a Cafe. There is signing but you can't make out the words because its either in some European language or its too distorted/muffed by the atmospheric adds ons. So it's alot like white noise, its very relaxing and easy to just get lost in work while listening.

For me it can be jarring going from regular music to "study music" as often they are different genres. It actually distracts me more listening to lo-fi or classical music as that isn't what I normally listen to. What I found best works for me is listening to instrumentals of songs I already like. I felt more productive and at ease this way, I hope this helps :)

Hi! I swear by listening to classical and lo-fi music. Lots of research has discussed the benefits of listening to classical music by studying. Sometimes I do like listening to my favorite songs on rotation but not when I want to be super focused on my work, since I can find myself singing along to the lyrics. To each their own though! I have a friend that listens to rap because it "motivates" him so really whatever works for you!

This sounds stupid, but work with someone who will keep you accountable while using a modified version of the pomodoro method. Set a timer for each other and don't speak, and then talk for a bit, and then set another timer. If I stick to it, it always works for me and I feel like I get a lot of work done. Just me though so hopefully this works for others as well!

Here are some of my favorites!

If you like the pomodoro method for studying and enjoy lofi with rain or campfire sounds, I can't recommend the youtube channel Abao in Tokyo (https://www.youtube.com/c/%E9%98%BF%E9%B2%8D/featured) enough. If I'm not doing something too intensive I like to leave the video up and study "with" the guy in the video.

I am a huge Animal Crossing/Nintendo fan and really enjoy the New Leaf OST (especially the songs from 12-6 am with rain!). They're so nice to listen to.

I'm not the hugest lofi fan but as a last resort sometimes I'll use the lofi girl. The ones above are definitely my go-tos! I hope they help :)

It honestly depends on what I'm studying for!

When studying for something that involves a lot of reading and analyzing, I tend to listen to classical music or LoFi beats from LoFi Girl on YouTube. When completing practice problems for like math, I tend to listen to any music.

I've found that listening to classical music while working/studying is really great for me. Since it doesn't have words I don't find myself getting distracted by lyrics. It is also really nice because depending on the vibe you're looking for, you can find classical music that is more relaxing and calming, or you can find classical music that is more upbeat and fast paced if want something with more energy. I've also found that if you do want to listen to music with lyrics, it helps to listen to songs you aren't familiar with because then you won't be tempted to sing along or be as likely to get distracted by it.

I like listening to music that has no lyrics while studying because when the songs have lyrics I automatically get distracted. The playlists on Youtube that I find most helpful are "lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to" and "Ambient Study Music To Concentrate - 4 Hours of Music for Studying, Concentration and Memory" :)

classical guitar is great if you're not feeling tired (it's also nice to fall asleep too lol) but I also love listening to songs in different languages so I can't really sing along. Japanese pop is a great option!
