Test curve?
I know it wasn't uncommon for chemistry professors to curve their class' midterm grades when everything was in person. Is that something that could still happen for online tests?

Re: Test curve?
Midterms were not curved in 14A because the test averages were fairly high, so I don't think they will be curved this quarter either.

Re: Test curve?
Lavelle hasn't ever mentioned curving test grades, so I don't think that it's very likely.

Re: Test curve?
I think it's the same as 14a, no curve. He only gave a 10 point gift because many people found the final very difficult. But I am not sure if he'll do that

Re: Test curve?
Last quarter there was no curve unfortunately so I would be very surprised if he did decide to curve the midterm.

Re: Test curve?
I don't think Lavelle mentioned a curve on midterms, last quarter he gave an extra 10 points on the final though so hopefully he does that again this quarter.

Re: Test curve?
In 14A he did not curve the midterm grades and the test averages were pretty high. On the final he did add an extra 10 points to the final grade but I doubt that this would happen. If it did, he would have said something by now.

Re: Test curve?
Lavelle usually does not curve since the exam scores are typically high. Last quarter he did add 10 points to the final exam for everyone though!

Re: Test curve?
I really don't think Lavelle will grade on a curved system because the test averages are typically on the higher end... That's what my TA said week 1 as well!

Re: Test curve?
No curve most likely; but Lavelle's form of a curve was the bonus question and also the fact that having a 50% in the class still means you pass with a C- I believe

Re: Test curve?
I think tests are never curved, but he will look at the distribution of grades at the end of the quarter.

Re: Test curve?
the tests weren't curved for 14A, so I don't think they'll be for 14b either, unless the class as a whole does poorly.

Re: Test curve?
Tests are never curved with Lavelle, but for the 14a final he did give everyone an extra 10 points. I don't think he'd be so nice after midterm 1 though since like 20% of the class aced it.

Re: Test curve?
The midterms were not curved last quarter, so I think it is highly unlikely for them to be curved this quarter :(

Re: Test curve?
Last quarter he did not curve anything so i don't think he will this time either. The only boost we got was an extra 10 points last quarter on the final, which isn't really a curve.

Re: Test curve?
Given that 14A last quarter did not have a curve, I am pretty sure there isn't a curve for this class either.

Re: Test curve?
There hasn't been a curve for past midterms, so I don't believe there will be one this time.

Re: Test curve?
In the past the tests were not curved so I dont believe they will be for this quarter either. I believe it depends on how well people do on the exam

Re: Test curve?
Tests most likely aren't curved but the overall distribution of the grades might be at the end of the quarter. :)

Re: Test curve?
Due to the averages on our exams being pretty high, I do not think Professor Lavelle will curve our exam scores. The closest thing I have seen to Lavelle curving was him adding 10 extra points to our Chem 14A final score.

Re: Test curve?
As far as I'm concerned Lavelle doesn't ever curve, he'll give bonus questions like we seen on the past two midterms but besides that your score is your score. However, I believe he did round people who had like .98/.99% last quarter for final grades so there's a chance he may do that again if you're worried about being borderline between two grades.

There is no curve, but a 50% is considered passing for this class if you're P/NP. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Re: Test curve?
If I remember correctly, Dr. Lavelle gave a few free points after the 14a final. I could be wrong since it's been a few months.

I don't think there will be any curves, but Lavelle did give us 10 free points for the final in 14A.

Re: Test curve?
no curve but there's gonna be two bonus questions, hopefully, that could help a bit.
Re: Test curve?
he does not curve but he does work out ways to help improve ones grade when stuck between two grades.

Re: Test curve?
He doesn't curve if the average is high. I don't understand how that's happening in chem but maybe that's just because I suck at chem

Re: Test curve?
I highly doubt there will be a curve considering the amount of students that score very well on the exams ..

Re: Test curve?
I don't anticipate any curve, especially since he's given us bonus questions and more time.
