Winter GEs?

Postby Brianna Martilla 1C » Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:46 pm

So I think I will be taking 14BL in the winter if it's available, but if it's not I want to take a GE. Does anyone have some recommendations for interesting classes? I feel like there are fewer available than I thought. Anyway, I'd love to hear about your experiences!

it depends on the requirement you are trying to fill, but Psych, Classics, and Scand have some easy classes.

Some interesting GEs I’ve taken are Chicanx Studies 10A and B, EDM 8 which is a musicology class about the history of EDM. I am not a big fan of EDM but this class was very interesting.

If you are interested in ethics and that application to biology and medical research, then i would suggest Biomedical Ethics! Super interesting and informative class that makes you think and teaches you a lot about modern debate topics in both politics and the scientific community. Really allows you to form your own opinions and learn how to support your arguments with evidence and cohesive thoughts. Anthropology classes are super fun and not a lot of work needed to get an A, I suggest ANTHRO 2 if theyre offering it!

I personally took a cluster, so I don't have much experience with taking GEs, but I've heard from others that Physci 5 and Ling 1 and fairly easy/fun.

history of the american motion picture (ftv 6a)! took it fall quarter to fulfill my performing arts GE and i wish i could take it again. professor kushigemachi is a gem and the movies he selects are really entertaining. not too much work if you know how to schedule your time well and he's very understanding as well.

Musicology 68 is an amazing GE for Foundation of Arts and Humanities -Visual and Performance Arts Analysis and Practice. I believe that is offered winter each year. Its all about the history of the Beatles, and most classes you get to sit and listen to an entire album or watch a movie, and the lectures are super engaging! It is essay based as opposed to requiring tests and most of the essays are opinion based and allow you to listen to and write about an album. I had already completed this GE but took the class anyways and it was well worth it!

I really enjoyed my communications class this quarter, COMM 10. It was super interesting and pretty easy. I also enjoyed my literature class, ComLit2CW with professor Komar. It satisfies your diversity requirement and one other requirement (I think your analysis one?), but it is a lot of heavy reading. But if you enjoy exploring literature I definitely recommend taking the class! The TA's are super helpful and it will definitely improve your writing style, which can come in handy for writing a thesis statement later down the line :)

If Musicology 5 is offered, I would highly recommend taking it (especially with Professor Holmes)! It fills the Visual & Performing Arts GE and is super easy and fun.

A lot of people have talked about anthro classes and I definitely agreed! I took Anthro 2 last quarter and am taking anthro 1 this quarter and I can definitely say they're pretty easy A's and interesting to boot (Anthro 1 more-so than Anthro 2 for me).

I took Anthro 2 in the Fall and thought it was totally doable and not too time consuming. Depending on your prof you could even done with the class by Week 8 or so because mine dropped the lowest quiz and lowest paper!

I'm not sure if this is offered next quarter, but I highly recommend Ethnomusicology M50A or M50B with Professor De Castro! I took Ethnmus M50A with him fall quarter and I really enjoyed the class. You don't need any prior musical background knowledge and the quizzes/tests are all super straightforward and easy (for online, not sure about for in-person). I also now have a newfound appreciation for jazz music :D

Scand 50, Phil 22, and History 13b were all not too difficult and interesting!

Musclg 5 is easy (graded on participation and 3 papers which you get an A on if you follow the rubric) but also really interesting! For spring quarter, I'm taking Anthro 2.

Musicology 68 is a very interesting class if you're looking for a random VAPA class! It's about the Beatles.

Art History 25, Museum Studies, is a pretty fun and easy class! Also, any of the Anthro GE's are interesting.

I know a few people planning on taking Musicology 7 in the spring. That might be a fun class to try!

I personally found MCD BIO 50 a pretty cool GE to take. Its focus is on stem cells and the ethics behind research/procurement/etc. I definitely really loved the professor (Dr. Lee) too!

Since I'm an Anthro major I'm taking the beginning anthro courses anyway. They're pretty easygoing on coursework and the information isn't difficult to understand.

Ling1 is very interesting and the workload is pretty manageable. Plus Anthro 4 (which I'm taking now) isn't very time consuming at all, and there's no tests (at least for online school). Instead, there's 6 assignments, one of which is dropped.

Soc Gen 5 (with Kelty) was alright once you get used to the format of the weekly work. There were 6 homework assignments and you had different options for what format you wanted to submit (I tended to opt for the 250 research paper and one of the assignments would be dropped from your grade). Also, I took Musclg 5 (Hist. of Rock & Roll with Holmes) last quarter and the workload was chill and I had a really cool TA :) I believe there were 3 2-page musical analyses as well as discussion participation that went toward your grade. I'm not sure if those will be offered next winter, though.

I took Sociology 1 and even though the exams are a little bit difficult, I loved the content so much and it opened my eyes to social constructs that we take as fact. In addition, if you are a stem bio major like me then you will probably like taking MCDB 50- Stem Cells Ethics, Biology, and Politics. There are no exams in that class, just one essay and a group project so I'd say it is pretty easy to get an A.

Does anyone know of any good GEs that I could possibly take during spring quarter that'll get a requirement out of the way for a chem major.

I am taking DESMA 9, it sounds really interesting and fills the visual and performance arts GE. It's also only one, two-hour lecture a week so I think it'll be easy to manage if you are taking a heavy course load.
