Re: Tutoring?
Please try use all the free resources I am offering students in my classes:
Peer Facilitated Learning Sessions
https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=157&t=15397&sid=7f3db41bccf37c2b1084c1112efebba2

https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=157&t=15458&sid=7f3db41bccf37c2b1084c1112efebba2
You can ask me questions at the end of each class, or in my office hours (see Syllabus W & F 4-5pm), or on Chemistry Community.
I am also organizing many, many review sessions for the midterm and final exams.
You can also attend study groups organized on Chemistry Community or organize one.
If you really, really want to pay for tutoring then stop by the Undergraduate Office 4006 Young Hall as they have a list of private pay tutors.
[Please note that my UAs, TAs, and myself, cannot be involved in private-payment tutoring for students in my classes.]
Hope this helps.

This is a bit late, but you might want to check out Alpha Chi Sigma, the chemistry fraternity here. They offer free tutoring by appointment. Here's a link to their site: http://www.chem.ucla.edu/axe/tutoring.html

Did anyone happen to write down how to sign up for AAP Peer Learning and if it is not too late to sign up?

I think it's be best to sign up for AAP sessions before week 3 starts.
To sign up for AAP you can go to your myUCLA and under the 'Academics' tab you can find peer learning which is where can find several tutoring sessions. If you aren't sure if you meet the requirements for AAP you can visit Campbell Hall or call the office there.

Hi, if you are not a part of AAP, are you still able to attend sessions? Also, does anyone have the exact requirements to be able to attend the sessions?

I believe you must be part of AAP to attend sessions.
There are four ways to be eligible for AAP.
I hope this helps!

This is a good resource. As is AAP tutoring.
Don't forget to use the 60 hours every week of peer learning sessions and office hours.
See times on my class website.
I am supervising 30 UA and TAs and meet with them 3 hours every week (in addition to many email).
I also see attendance. Some are very small groups and are practically one-on-one tutoring sessions.
Why pay for private tutoring when I have organized 60 hours free every week for my students.
Plus my class has Chemistry Community 24/7 for questions, answers, discussion, announcements, and even good humor! See jokes section.

I would say so. Often, they already have topics that they think we should cover, but they're always open for suggestions.

Look for tutoring with some of the academic frats! Also, I'm sure you can just ask some upperclassmen and I'm sure they would be happy to tutor for a relatively low price.

They are like small, guided study groups. There is a short explanation by the plf but its mostly guided problem solving

When are the review sessions for the tests/midterms/final exams? Are they going to be by discussion section/with TAs or independent?

They are usually every day for the week before the midterm and final exam, held by TA's and UA's outside of discussion section (independent). The times and rooms will be announced closer to the midterm date and final date.

If you are a second year taking this class you probably already know people who took the class freshman year. It's not a bad idea to ask around to see if any of your friends are willing to help you out/tutor you because they see you all the time/can hold you accountable.

Re: Tutoring?
To add on to all the comments already posted about the different tutoring programs offered at UCLA, I personally found attending TA office hours helpful. From the TA office hours I have been to, I was able to get a lot of my burning questions answered when I was not able to ask them during lecture or discussion. In addition, the TAs were able to personally guide me through the different problems.

You can go to tutoring with AAP. You can enroll to a session on myucla, under peer learning. I believe they are still allowing people to enroll.

There are also a lot of office hours (step-up, drop-in, and workshops) that are up on the hill, which are a very convenient for students living on campus.

There are multiple step up programs and workshops as well as office hours that you might want to try before looking for an outside tutor who might not be as familiar with the specific material we need to know.

The step up sessions are best if you're looking for in depth explanations on every level of problem or concept even ones that might seem basic.

Hey!
I 've found a few good tutors for the Fall Quarter of Chem 14A on the Chemistry and Biochemistry website where they post a list of tutors for the current quarter and they also update it every quarter! Here is the link: https://www.chemistry.ucla.edu/sites/de ... orList.pdf

I also want to know if there is anyway we can access test #1 that has been given out previous quarters in Dr. Lavelle's class, so we can use them to prepare for our upcoming test next week.

I have been attending the step it up, workshop, and office hour style review sessions and honestly I believe those are better review than a tutor. The instructors are very good and explain things in an easy to understand fashion. Plus, you get practice problems and tips that are directly from the class. Hope this helps!

I would definitely recommend signing up for AAP's peer learning sessions as well as joining study groups with other classmates. There are many resources out there in addition to tutors. Peer learning sessions offer many study sessions so they are flexible with your schedules- they also do midterm and final reviews which are very useful when it comes to studying for exams.

The Step- Up are more step by step practice and at a slower pace while the workshop is more for if you have a specific question to ask rather than learning at a slower pace.

AAP is honestly the best form of help with a class in my experience. PLFs help a lot and in my experience you form a nice small community with people in your classes you wouldn't have met otherwise

I’d say to attend some of the zoom sessions that are available everyday. They go over problems and explain everything in person.

I wouldn’t pay for a tutor when Dr Lavelle has provided so many free resources for those struggling with their chemistry. If after using those resources you still feel bad then I would look into a tutor.

I really recommend utilizing Dr. Lavelle's programs put in place: Step Up program and UA help Workshops! Also, you can also look into AAP tutoring which is a free service at UCLA!

For anyone in AAP, do you believe this adds help that is not provided by the sessions already offered through the course? And is it hard to get into AAP or do you just have to meet a set list of requirements?
Re: Tutoring?
Yes I do believe that adds help since a lot of people don't know about the resource and it is very easy to get in as long as you meet the basic requirements of being a minority and earning a certain amount for AAP.

Check their website and you should be able to schedule tutoring now.

Have you attended? How often do you recommend going? Just for homework help?
Here is a link to the step up sessions! You can go as many times as you'd like. I've attended and they're extremely helpful.

Thank you so much for providing this! I'll be sure to look out for these step sessions, could you talk a little more about what you do there?

Re: Tutoring? [ENDORSED]
Do you guys feel overwhelmed like you don't have time to attend lectures discussions and office hour sessions in balance with your other classes because I am feeling totally swamped

Yes I totally feel that but honestly I felt more overwhelmed when I wasn't going to extra office hours or step up sessions because I felt so lost! I would recommend just setting aside one or two hours on the days you do not have many classes to go to an extra session for chem because they saved me for the midterm. Other than that though, I find it super helpful to write down a To-Do list everyday because it keeps me organized. :)
