I was wondering how many questions test one has? I was also wondering how many points will be taken off for simple mistakes (sig figs, units, etc.)?

Dr. Lavelle hasn't said how many questions the test will be nor how it will be graded.

I attended a chemistry study session where I was told there would only be about 3-4 questions, but most likely with multiple parts. I was also told that really studying and understanding what is listed in Outline 1 would help us on the test! I don't know how strict they'll be on grading though:/

My TA said that they are still in the process of making the test and that there are about eight questions right now.

Is the test format multiple choice, free response or a mixture of both?

All tests and exams will have 8 questions.
The vast majority will be like homework questions which is why doing the homework is the best preparation.

Multiple choice is low level testing and does not allow for partial credit.

I will announce this in class.

I think that it will probably be 8 questions like stated above with one for each topic of the review (empirical formula, molecular formula, balancing chemical equations, limiting reactant calculations, and molarity/ dilution of a solution).

Also, make sure to practice dilution problems, hence I noticed more people struggle on those...

Yes, my TA also said that there would 7-8 questions.

My TA mentioned the test will be structured a lot like the homework problems, so they are all free response and it's possible to get partial credit.

Also, is the quiz only testing topics in Outline 1? In other words, is the quantum stuff going to be on the test too

My TA said that the quiz will only cover the Fundamentals topic, and will not include stuff on The Quantum World.

The test will only be covering what we learned in high school chemistry, which is the "Review of Chemical and Physical Principles" unit we just learned.

My TA said that since it is the first test, they will try and give us a great opportunity to succeed.

As announced on my class website Sept 26:

Test 1 covers high-school review material. For details see Outline 1 and Test & Exam Schedule.

Since I typed this probably best not to ignore what Dr. Lavelle already answered. :-)

No, we do not just a pen and a scientific calculator.

Yea it is 8 questions, probably with subsections as you get 40 minutes for it, and it is worth 40 points

If we do not understand what a question on the test asks is it allowed to ask for clarity from our TA's?

I think we can ask what we don't understand first and let the TAs decide whether or not it's ok to explain to us.

I think in general during testing they're not really allowed to answer these types of questions unless it's a glaring wording error.

Around 8 questions but with multiple parts. For this test there is not much emphasis on sig figs and units.

Test one has 8 questions (some with multiple parts). We are given 40 minutes to complete it and from my experience that was more than enough time. Sig figs are worth 4 points total.

Thank you for this information. It really helped a lot. Now I can thoroughly the topics that will be on the exam.

When will the test take place? Does it cover both equilibrium and acids and bases?

the test takes place during your discussion section starting Tuesday of next week. Also, I had Caram last quarter and we had weekly quizzes each worth 5 points total but he would write the number of points each question was worth next to the questions so we knew how much weight each question carried. Does anyone know if Lavelle does the same thing?

Last quarter he put how much a question was worth next to it, so I assume he will do the same this quarter.

It takes place in your discussion section next week and both equilibrium and acids and bases will be covered on Test 1. (He posted an announcement on the class page.)

I believe the test will be all free response that is how the tests in discussion were formatted for 14a

if its similar to 14A then its usually 8 questions (some with sub parts) for 40 min
