I don't understand how this class is graded. I read the syllabus and it says, "Each test and exam has a total score but is not assigned a grade. Only at the end of the class when the class average score (out of 500 points) is known are final grades assigned. This class does not use a curve". I thought his would make it easier to get an A but I have heard mixed reviews. Does anyone know how grading works and if it is difficult to get a good grade? Does it hurt your grade if others do better than you?

If you're having trouble understanding the syllabus, it would probably be best to ask people who have previously taken the class. Better yet, your TA could probably break down the syllabus and grading scheme perfectly.

Each test/midterm/final does not receive a letter grade because your final grade is not accumulated until the end of the quarter. This class is based off a number of points and those points are calculated at the end once you receive all of your test scores from Week 1- Finals Week.

If a class is not graded on a curve, I'm assuming it's graded using a straight scale: 87-89% = B+, 83-86% = B, 80-82% = B- and so on. I think that this means that it will not hurt if others do better than you. On the syllabus the outline for the final point system is stated, which is out of 500:
Weekly Homework 70 points
Weekly Online Discussion 30 points
Three Tests 120 points total
Two Hour Midterm 110 points
Three Hour Final 170 points
Total = 500 points
