KAREN SUN 5-7PM WORKSHOP - DOWNLAOD WORKSHEETS HERE

Posted: Fri Oct 04, 2019 4:25 pm
by Chem_Mod
Greetings Chem 14A students!

My name is Karen Leung, one of your UAs this quarter. I will be hosting workshops every Sunday 5-7pm this quarter, and I use worksheets I have made to facilitate my workshops. They will be posted on this SAME post here every week (I'll try to have them posted by Friday night, but Saturday by the latest). I created these worksheets as extra practice for every week's material learned. (They are made to imitate Dr. Lavelle's question styles to the best of my ability.) If you plan on attending my workshops, please bring this worksheet (either printed or available on a computer/tablet). You do not need to complete it, we will go over the problems together during the session.

Breakdown of my workshop:
-First review all course material learned in the previous week
-Do practice problems together from my worksheets
-Answer questions from lecture, homework, modules, etc. anything that anyone wants answered

The answers to the worksheets will be posted on this SAME post AFTER the session, but no work will be shown, so coming out to the session is necessary to understand the steps of getting to each solution. The worksheets for later weeks (Week 2,3,4..etc) will also be posted on THIS SAME post as well, so you will need to come back to this post every week for each week's worksheets.

Attached is the first worksheet of the quarter!

No sign ups needed! Just show up.

I wrote these questions based on my experience with Dr. Lavelle over the years and some questions were adapted from old exams. However, difficulty in exams vary from year to year.

I'd also like to know if you're planning on posting the worksheets weekly! Also, is it possible that you might have (or develop) a group chat to continue posting these sheets?

What was the scam for workshops that Dr. Lavelle mentioned in lecture? Something to do with asking for our phone numbers?

Yeah he mentioned it in my lecture which was at 2. He said in one of his earlier lectures there was a piece of paper going around to sign up for workshops. It asked for your name and number. One of the TA's saw it and told Dr. Lavelle and stopped it because he would never ask for our numbers.

Hello, I'm not sure what that was about. I will never ask for your contact information either, you guys can find my email on Dr. Lavelle's UA page, if you need to personally email me for anything. Otherwise, worksheets will be posted here every week.

If we need to leave early from a workshop would that be okay? During lecture, Dr. Lavelle said that the Peer Learning sections were designed to be flexible so we can come in and leave at any time, but I don't know if this applied to workshops as well.

Yes, no attendance is taken and attending my workshop is entirely optional, so you may come and leave at any time you like.

Workshops are separate from step-up sessions. But I try to end the workshop at around 1.5hr mark, so that I have 30mins for individual questions.

Yeah, I found another UA who posts helpful worksheets too with the answers. You can search for her name and she should come up. Her name is Sonia and here are some of the ones I found from her.

If a certain frequency of radiation is not ejecting electrons from the surface of a metal, is
it possible to eject electrons by increasing the intensity of the incident radiation?

How would we solve a question such as the question stated above? Does the intensity refer to the wavelength of the radiation?

NO. Intensity does not refer to the wavelength. Decreasing wavelength/increasing frequency on the other hand, can increase the energy of the incoming photon and eject electrons. Increasing the intensity only increases the number of photons available, which can increase the NUMBER of electrons ejected, but not the KE of the ejected electron.

Here is the question: 10. Which of the following statements regarding electromagnetic radiation is true?

Could someone please explain how to solve the first problem in Worksheet 6? The problem asks...

For the following nitrogen oxide compounds:
a. Draw the most stable lewis structure.
b. Determine the shape.
c. Determine whether the compound is polar or nonpolar.

Nitric Oxide (NO)

Nitrogen Dioxide ( NO )

Both of these compounds have radicals. How does this effect the shape of the compounds along with the most stable Lewis Structure?

For question 2(b) we are asked to determine the hybridization for the carbon atom in HCOOH. How would one solve this?

for 2(b) if you draw out the Lewis Structure for the molecule, the carbon atom is single bonded to a hydrogen and an oxygen and double bonded to another oxygen atom. Thus, it has 3 regions of electron density and is sp2 hybridized, which is trigonal planar.

Hello,

Sorry for late notice, but this Sunday's session (11/24/19) will be CANCELLED as I have personal matters to attend this weekend. Unfortunately next Sunday is also Thanksgiving weekend, in which we will not be holding session. HOWEVER, I will post my notes and a worksheet during week 10 for all the remaining material that will be covered on your final.

Happy Holidays!!

Hello everyone!

Because Thanksgiving is situated in Week 9 this year, and your final is this upcoming Sunday, I will unfortunately not be able to hold one last workshop with you all. However, I have attached my notes for coordination compounds as well as acid/base structures (the ones I usually write on the board) below. Feel free to use it to study!

I have also attached a worksheet with practice problems on coordination compounds and acid base structures with the key in a separate file.

Almost there!!
