Accessing the E-textbook

I know that a few students bought the e-textbook instead of the regular textbook. I'm interested in buying that one instead but I don't know which bundle on the Macmillan Learning student store includes the e-textbook. Do all of them include the e-textbook or only specific bundles?

Hello!

I am pretty sure there is one option that should include “e-text” in the title. The loose-leaf one will be an actually paper type book.

Sapling is kind of like the launchpad for the LS7 Series on Macmillian, if you purchase the bundle that includes sapling that would be the online E textbook. I bought all of the bundle from Dr Lavelle's link that he had shared for about $190 and it includes the E-book, sapling, solutions, and loose leaf textbook.

If you buy the bundle and you can't access the e-book deven with the card they give you just call sapling learning and theyll give it to you because I had that same problem.

Sapling isn't mandatory, but Professor Lavelle has put "multiple additional assignments and learning objectives for those who need additional assistance" which will definitely help you in any way possible, especially if you are struggling with a specific topic and may not be able to make it to some TA or UA hours.

sapling is similar to launchpad for the LS7 series, you practice problems and review concepts. It comes with the textbook lavelle posted on the site!

I'm not 100% sure if it's mandatory, but I have used the free trial and completed the Week 1 homework and it showed up it in the gradebook on CCLE. And I'm pretty sure on the syllabus it makes up a part of the grade percentage. Hope this helps!

Sapling learning is what we will be using to turn in our homework, the part that is graded. The extra practice will be the textbook questions that are in the syllabus. You can access sapling through the CCLE page under activities/ resources then external tools.

You said that you heard that the sapling questions were extra practice, and that is true that there are extra practice sections (math review, practice drawing molecules, and chemical equations training). Though like others mentioned, sapling also holds the questions that are required homework for that week.

No, the textbook is not a physical copy. I just received my order and they just give an envelope with the code to Sapling/e-book.

I'm still a bit confused on how we get the E-book. After ordering through the UCLA Store, and getting the access code for Sapling, is the E-book just a link for the pdf file that also comes in the mail (or through email in recent cases) or is it accessible through Sapling?

It's accessible through Sapling as well!! If you click on the main course link when you get on Sapling (there should be links at the top under where it says Sapling Learning), the textbook will be shown on the very right side of the page under where it says clock.

Actually we do need Sapling to hand in our weekly homework. You can buy the bundle at UCLA store and they will ship a code for Sapling to you if you live in U.S., or you may choose to pick up the code on campus. If you live outside U.S., just email the store, and they will send the code to you via email.

It's obviously not.(I think a hardcopy one should be far more expensive) You should receive a piece of paper with your Sapling code, and you can get the e-book on Sapling I think.

It’s an e book for this course because there’s videos and links inside the book. You should get your code on a piece of paper. If you haven’t gotten your code yet, Lavelle sent out a link where you can access the book as a free trial until your code comes in.

I wonder if Sapling was just optional for previous classes, because our syllabus definitely says that it's mandatory for us. Like you said, we submit our homework through sapling and use the code from the UCLA store to access the ebook.

Not sure if this is your question, but if you are ordering from the UCLA store, the e-book which is included with the sapling subscription, can only be accessed after you receive your physical Sapling access card. UCLA is currently working on shipping these codes out, and it will include access to the Sapling work program and the book. The free trial sapling access also provides access to the book I believe.

There's an option to do a free trial for a few days; it should show up on the page that you're prompted to submit the mailed code.
If you just need the textbook itself, there are PDFs floating around online. Check sites like libgen or b-ok.

Is this a situation in which you already ordered the book and you didn't get the code along with it or are you just waiting on the book and the access code to come in the mail? If it's the first I would let the professor know about your circumstance, but for now we can use the (I think 10 day?) free trial which lets you access the Sapling and do the homework. The professor sent us an email about how to do that but let me know if you need help finding the access code too!

The online UCLA Store is selling physical copies. I believe it does come with a code for the e-book, so you can use it to extend the licensing period of your existing e-book if there is one. However, the store does warn that it may ship you a used copy instead of a new one. It's unlikely that a used book would still have an unused code.

Sapling includes the Etextbook and the Student Solutions Manual.
All three for the price of one.

If you have access to Sapling website then you already have access to the Etextbook and the Student Solutions Manual.

Please ask TA, or UA, or another student to show you: The Ebook is on the right side of Sapling web page.

I have only used the e-book and it has been working for me, but if you would benefit from using a textbook instead of the e-book, then it is definitely worth the money. Plus, when you are done with the book you could sell it and make some money.

Sapling is required! In the past, I believe it wasn't, but now it is. You buy the bundle that Lavelle has up on the site, it's around $70ish dollars I believe for multiterm access. It gives you access to the ebook and other resources. Sapling is also where you do the homework which I believe is worth 5 points per assignment/week. The textbook questions are not our homework, they're simply good practice.

Hi, I had the exact same problem, because I did not previously take 14A with Lavelle. I know one of my friends did this as well who is in the class, and was able to email the email that had sent the receipt for her purchase of the ebook from the ucla store site, and they got back to her with instructions on how to get her code. I however, for some reason did not receive a receipt sent to my email of my purchase so I am still trying to figure out how to receive my code. If you end up figuring out another way to get your could, would you please share with me what you did!

When I purchased sapling from the UCLA store last year, they did not send me an access code in my email but they mailed me a receipt instead... if you have not gotten an email from them by now they are probably going to mail you a letter with an access code on the back. Sapling allows you to access your classwork for free for 14 days though, so you can use that feature and pay later or enter your access code once you get one.

Go to sapling learning site for this class -> Resources -> Atkins 7e SSM (a.k.a. student solution manual). This student solution manual includes answers for odd-number textbook questions, not sure if there's a way to get answers for even-number questions though.

At first, I tried to use the access code I got last quarter, but it said it's already used. So I chose the other option; which is something like "use my course credit". So basically, if you bought the multi-term access last quarter there should be $72 credit in your sapling account that you could apply to this class. It may seem like a re-purchase but it actually didn't charge anything and you don't need a new code. Make sure to log into Saping via the link on CCLE.

You should be able to receive an electronic receipt from the UCLA textbook within a few hours after purchasing the ebook. If you didn't, maybe check your spam or check if the transaction was indeed successful.

Last quarter, I forwarded my electronic receipt to textonline@asucla.ucla.edu and asked for the access code and they email me back the access code within 2 business days.

Yes, the Sapling is graded and that is where our actual homework grade comes from. The textbook problems are optional and just there for additional practice to help you prepare for exams and understand the concepts better.

Yes! When you open the Sapling home page for Chem 14B, the answer key for all of the odd textbook problems should be in the resource section. It is the PDF called Atkins 7e SSM. I don't think there is an answer key for evens available to us, but I believe all the questions Prof. Lavelle assigns are odd anyway.

Hi! Does anyone know when Dr. Lavelle says the Sapling assignments are due midnight Sunday of the week is he referring to Sunday as the first day of the week? Like is the Week 1 Assignment due on 11:59pm on Jan 10th or 17th? Thanks in advance :)

I emailed textonline@asucla.ucla.edu a receipt of my purchase and asked them how to access the e-textbook, and they got back to me with my code pretty quickly. Just make sure you include your order number/information.

sapling is how you get homework points. It adds up to 50 points in total. So it is worth doing to have some extra cushion in your grade in case you do not do so well on the tests.

After completing the first assignment on Sapling, it seems like the answers do not take sig figs into account. Is this true? Would tests be the same?

From last quarter at 14A, we had multiple choice tests for the midterm and final and Lavelle said not to worry about sig figs because each of the answer options will vary that there closest one will be the correct answer. I think that same concept will also apply to 14B!

Everything on Sapling is automatically graded right? We don't have to turn anything in for this portion of the course?

Yes and the 5 community posts, but I believe that should be all that's turned in for this course besides midterms and final.

Yeah, I believe so. We just have the 5 chemistry community posts weekly that we have to "turn in."

I believe it is more beneficial because at least for when you enrolled in 14A with Lavelle it carried over into 14B.

The assignments we have due for this class are the 5 chemistry community posts and sapling every week, both worth the same amount of points

Usually not. But you can find answers for most of them at the end of the textbook. And if you can't, usually chemistry community (here) has the answer

When we purchase Sapling, do we get an access code, online or do we have to get the physical access card shipped to us.
Is there anyway to get the code online, for International Students - since shipping it would be an expense almost the price of the code itself

Yes, what is due each week are 5 posts on Chemistry Community and the Sapling assignments. Both are 5 points each for the 10 weeks, for a total of 100 points for both combined.

I am having a lot of trouble getting into Sapling. If I try to go through CCLE it says it is invalid and if I try to do it through the sapling website it tells me that I need to do it through CCLE. I need to access it asap and my access code is only arriving this week. Please help, I don't knowhow else to get in.

At least for me, I saw an option that said you could do the free 11 day trial on the same page where I was entering my credit from last quarter. I’m not sure if that’ll give you the book for a few days for free? Last quarter there was an option where we could do this and it worked well for me

Hi! He usually specifies what week they’re due. Since there have been some sapling problems for some people, Lavelle said they are due the Sunday of week 2 (the 17th)

For anyone that is wondering why they possibly have not received Sapling access code. It is possible that the shipping option you chose was the "pick up at ucla" (in order to check out, they made you choose a shipping option even though its an ebook). I called Ackerman and they simply said that you can email them directly and they will email you the code.

Pretty sure that Sapling is mandatory, and will actually be collected midnight of the following Sunday, however, is this the only "homework" due??

Yes, I believe Sapling is the only mandatory homework. Professor Lavelle gives us textbook problems as well but those problems are not graded.
