Lewis Structure Questions

Postby Izamary Marquez 2H » Fri Nov 13, 2020 10:20 pm

In questions about drawing the Lewis structure of an atom, the questions usually refer to "additional Stability"...What does this mean? Is this only with regards to resonance?

Additional stability refers to the fact that we can change the Lewis structure such that the formal charges for each of the atoms becomes closer to 0. We can usually do this by extending the octet for central atoms in the third period or larger. If you need a specific example in which the extended octet and resonance concepts are combined, I would suggest Google searching the SO4-2 resonance structures. It will show all the configurations that are possible given two single bonds and two double bonds.
