Chemistry Posts in 14B
I was wondering how Chemistry posts in 14B were going to be like. Will we keep our accounts and just add on to it (i.e. 100 posts by the end of 14B), or will we have to do something else?
Re: Chemistry Posts in 14B
Great you asked!
Same account.
This means your total posts would need to be minimum 100 posts by the end of Chem 14B.

Are these posts added into the gradebook week by week or at random like how 14A was added?

I think that will depend on when TA are able to update grades or whenever Dr. Lavelle tells them to update the discussion grades.

I think we keep our accounts, but update your username to reflect your new discussion section. It saves all your posts.

We keep the same account for Chem 14B. By the end we should have a total of 100 posts for full credit. We keep the same account, but we change our username to align with our new discussion section. For those that don't know how to change their username, you just go to "register Alias and Password."

Re: Chemistry Posts in 14B
We need to create additional 50 posts for 14B (5 posts each week). So, in total we will have 100 posts.

Hi,
I had a different professor for 14A in the fall and I'm wondering about the definition of the chemistry community posts. must we create 5 new topics, or does a post also mean replying to another's question? Also, How do we see how many post we created.
thanks

you can do either or a combination of both, create new topics or reply to existing topics, for it to count towards your 5 posts for the week! after you post or reply to something, you can see how many posts you have on the right side of your post. alternatively, you can also click "quick links" on the top left and then click "your posts" to see everything you have posted from new topics to replies. just make sure you post 5 times per week! hope this helps :)

Also, it doesn't have to be strictly 5 posts per week. You just need to have at least 50 posts by the end of the quarter.

Hi!
I took chem14A back in the summer so I've never used Chemistry Community. Just to make sure I'm understanding everything correctly, we just need to post 5 times a week (50 pts by end of quarter) and they can be a question, answer, post, reply, etc related to the course. Since this is my first time on Chemistry Community, I would end with 50 posts by the end of the quarter instead of 100 like some other people.

Hi! This is also my first time with Lavelle as my professor and from my understanding every time you post on Chemistry Community you receive 1pt and you need to reach 5 points per week. Posts can range from asking questions, adding onto another students question, answering or commenting. You could read more about how the chem community point system works through Professor Lavelle's website under the "Weekly Online Discussion" tab.

Yes! This is my first time using Chemistry Community and I'm pretty sure we would end up with 50 posts instead of 100 since we are starting fresh with a new account instead of continuing from a previous account like some other students are.

Hi!
This is my first time using Chemistry Community, and I just wanted to clarify something---will we be posting all questions/answers here? Or are there different links we need to go to to ask different types of questions (like homework-specific questions)? Thanks in advance!

To post to specific topics, you can go to "board index" on the top left of your screen, and then scroll down to 14B. There you will see different topics in 14B and if you click on one there will be more topics within that unit. There you can post/answer questions specific to that topic by clicking the new post button that has a red star on the bottom left.

I believe we are limited to the ones already created under the board index. The topics "Student Social/Study Group" and "General Science Questions" are pretty broad and can encapsulate most questions not directly related to content.

Do all five of the weekly posts for credit have to be related to class content or are they also counted for credit if they concern administrative or general class questions?

There's no zoom link for lectures. If you go to the CCLE page and go to Media Resources, you'll find the lectures have been recorded (they're asynchronous).

Hi I had a different professor for 14A and just had some questions about Chemistry Community. I know someone already asked if logistical questions count, but do questions under this post count? When are the weekly posts counted up and graded? For example, for week 1 do we need to have posted 5 times by friday night, sunday night, etc. Also, I've been a little bit confused navigating this forum. Why is this topic, which is about general chem posts in 14B, underneath the ideal gases topic?

Hi, this is my first time taking Lavelle but from what I have gathered we have to post 5 times each week and the points do not roll over. I think all you have to do is respond or ask a new question five times each week to get credit. It does not matter whether or not you choose to create a new topic, or respond to someone else, but every week you need at least five and the points do not roll over. If I am wrong I apologize, this is my first time taking Lavelle.

After reading other people's answers it sounds like as long as you have 50 posts for 14B by the end of the quarter you should be fine, but I'd also check with your TA to be sure they don't expect 5 posts on a weekly basis.

Since the number of posts adds onto last quarter (which was 50 in 14A), would that technically mean that we need 55 posts by this Sunday? (technically)

Yes, technically you would need 55 posts by this Sunday if you did your 50 posts in 14A.

It might just have an issue loading. I would wait a little bit but if it still doesn't show up, make two more posts just to be sure.

Yes! Your minimum of five chem community posts are due before 11:59pm on Sundays, just like sapling homework !!

The points may not roll over right away, but they rolled over when my ta was calculating the final grade so they should overall

I think it really depends on the TA since last quarter, my TA said that it had to be 5 posts per week, and the points would not roll over. Then again, your TA might let you make 4 posts one week and 6 the next so long as you have the required amount by the end, but just to be safe, I would keep doing at least 5 each week.

Hi yes! If you click on board index, Dr. Lavelle has separated the topics into 14A and 14B, and then when you look at your posts I believe the only way to distinguish them is by the date.

Last quarter in 14A, the chemistry community posts were only added up every few weeks, so I would try to do 5/week just to stay on track but it should also be okay if you end up doing more some weeks and less others as long as you have 50 by the end of the quarter and make sure that your questions are under the right topic.

Thank you so much for answering this question! It was super helpful because I was previously confused on how to do Chemistry Community posts.

Re: Chemistry Posts in 14B
Will our posts be inputted into the gradebook weekly or will they all be inputted at the end of the winter quarter?

I think your UID is enough, but I definitely recommend adding your discussion section so that there are no inconveniences, and your TA is able to find and input your Chemistry Community posts faster into the gradebook.

Same account.
This means your total posts would need to be minimum 100 posts by the end of Chem 14B.
Thank you for answering this question! I had also been wondering the same thing :)

Re: Chemistry Posts in 14B
I think it would be the same as 14A, but since you use the same account, the total number of posts will be greater.

I believe the accounts remain the same and the new posts are added to the old account.

You will add on to the total number of posts that you already have. So by the end of 14B, you will need 100 posts. You also need to change your username for your discussion section.

Hi! We have to do a minimum of 5 posts each week and that adds up to 50 posts at the end of the quarter.

The five posts are due Sunday at midnight each week. Hope this helps!
Re: Chemistry Posts in 14B
You can keep the same account since you registered with you UID. Grading depends on your TA; some allow you to just have 100 posts by the end of the quarter and some require you to have 5 per week.

Were the Audio-Visual Focus-Topics a one time thing? Or will we have new ones each week? Thanks!

I think it was mentioned by another student who talked to Dr. Lavelle that the Audio-Visual Focus-Topics were only for chemical equilibrium and that there would not be any more of those for the quarter. That's what I've heard from a few different people, so I hope that helps!

You can leave your name, just make sure you add your new discussion number to it.

I took 14A over the summer and used a different textbook. As a result, I am rusty and at the same time new to the course style, content, etc. What should I know beforehand about succeeding in this course? What may seem optional but really should be mandatory?

Something that seems optional but should be mandatory is definitely doing the textbook problems and going to the peer learning sessions. It's fairly hard to retain the information just by taking notes from lecture and doing sapling, so going to the learning sessions help a lot.

I've been told by other people that sapling should be the primary focus since it is whats graded come to the end of the deadline. sapling should be the one you test your knowledge on and the textbook work is the one you use to actually practice for the big tests.

Both are extremely important so focus on both a good amount! I would say that the textbook problems are a bit more challenging, and it would prepare you better for midterms and finals, but Sapling ones are graded and are also challenging as well. :)
Re: Chemistry Posts in 14B
Yes, it is the same account and your posts stack up so by the end of the quarter you should have 100 posts if you got full credit each time.

I did too with Ow, and from what I've heard is reading the textbook and doing the practice problems inside it too REALLY help and are important, not just as supplements to Lavelle's recorded lectures.

At the end we should have 50 extra posts, so that when we view ours it will say 100 posts.

The sapling problems are most important to understand, while the textbook problems are mostly just extra practice.

The audio visuals were only for the equilibrium topic.
