Calculators
Does anyone know if we are allowed to use a graphing calculator for the midterms and final?

Re: Calculators
Yes! You're allowed a calculator, the constants and equations sheet, and as much blank scratch paper you think you need

Re: Calculators
If the rules are the same as last quarter, you should be allowed to use a graphing calculator on all exams!

Re: Calculators
I think scientific is technically preferred, but a graphing calculator is fine (they just don't want people to store info on it or program it)!

Re: Calculators
I would try to get a scientific calculator because it is preferred, but if graphing calculator is your only option then it is acceptable. They are mainly just worried about students storing information in the calculator before the exam.

Would we find the constants and equations sheet somewhere on Lavelle's website or would we just make one ourselves?

You will find the equation sheet on his website, you will just have to print it out beforehand and make sure not to write on it because the proctors will take a look at the sheet before the start of the exam

Re: Calculators
Yes, you can use any calculator (last quarter they preferred scientific but graphing is fine too) and then you will need to print the equation sheet on his website and the specific periodic table he has. They usually let you have 1-2 pieces of scratch paper (depending on the TA) and other than that you'll just need your phone to log onto the zoom.

Re: Calculators
All calculators are allowed! Just not the super-advanced ones that connect to the internet or whatever. :)

We use our phones to zoom because of the lockdown browser right? Is there any specific one he wants us to use. I didn't have Lavelle last quarter but I have used a lockdown browser for another class

Yup! I use my phone to Zoom, but if you have an external camera or something, I heard that works too :)! But you should be good with a phone :DD

Re: Calculators
I was able to use a graphing calculator last quarter for Lavelle's Chem 14A class so it should be okay.

For 14A, the number of midterm questions was 10-15 and each question was worth 6-7 points (if I remember correctly lol).

Re: Calculators
I think any type of calculator is allowed, but it does not necessarily need to be graphing, as long as it can express scientific notation you should be set!

Re: Calculators
As the other answers mentioned, I think any type of calculator should be fine, as long as you're not using your calculator to cheat or if you have a bunch of programs on it.

Yes, we use our phones because of the lockdown browser! Last quarter he wanted us to use the respondus lockdown browser, so I think he'll probably want us to use that one again this quarter.

We'll be using Respondus Lockdown broswer. There should be a quiz on your TA's site worth nothing for you to test it if needed. :)

Re: Calculators
You are allowed a scientific or graphing calculator, the equation/constant sheet, the periodic table, and scratch paper for the exam. Dr. Lavelle's website has the specific periodic table and equation sheet that is permitted for the test.

Hi! I would try to use your phone/another device as I think the device using respondus (external cameras) has problems connecting to the zoom. But maybe they ended up working I'm not sure.
And for the original question, you can use a graphing calculator for the exams. :)

Re: Calculators
Luckily it sounds like we can use a graphing calculator or scientific, which is nice because I know I always prefer to use the calculator I use for the homework on tests or it throws me off. Also random, but the TI-84 plus CE is very easy to use and I recommend it if you are looking for a new calculator.

It sounds like we can use any calculator for the exam as long as it's not too advanced.

Yup I'm pretty sure we can use any calculators because I haven't heard about any restrictions regarding this so far.
