Are you guys taking Chem 14BL or waiting for it to possibly be inperson in the Fall next year? And if so, what are you taking next quarter?

I'm taking chem 14BL next quarter, just because all of the chem I've learned thus far will be fresher in my brain than if I start next fall. I'm afraid I might forget a lot of the stuff we've learned if I take too long of a break.

I'm taking BL during the spring so that I can get the chemistry series done within two years.

Hello!
I'm currently taking Chem 14BL right now, and I just want to advise that this class, while not the most difficult material, is a lot of work. So if you think you are already going to have a busy schedule next quarter, you might want to consider whether you can handle this extra workload (weekly lab reports!). On the other hand, I heard that Chem 14BL online is a lot easier than if it were in person (not having to actually perform experiments), so that could be one reason you might want to take it during the spring/summer.

Thank you for letting us know. For anyone else taking 14BL right now, how comparable is the workload to 14B? Do you recommend taking 3 classes (instead of 4) to have more time?

I'm also thinking of taking 14BL next quarter with 14C. Along with those classes I plan on taking Physics 5B and maybe a writing 2 course

I am taking it right now with 14B and it's really not too hard. The online format involves a lot of simulations but I feel as though I understand the ideas even though we don't get the "hands on" aspect.

kind of a side question, is 14BL usually offered in summer as well? If so, is it being offered in sess A or C?

Yes it is offered during summer, i think that prof got bad reviews on bruinwalk but i would double check. I think doing it over summer might be the best idea since people have said the work load is a lot

Are we allowed to take 14C before we take 14BL? If so, do you think it would be worth it to take 14C in the spring and then take 14BL fall of 2021?

I'm not sure whether I'll take it in spring or not. I've heard some people take BL even late into their sophomore or junior year so I don't feel the rush to take it right away. I've also heard it's a lot of work so I'm debating on whether I'll be able to handle it next quarter or if it's better to wait till I have a lighter quarter.

I'm going to take BL over spring, but when I was talking to someone who was taking it simultaneously with 14d, they said they didn't feel disadvantaged for taking it later.

I plan to take 14BL next quarter. I am taking LS23L right now, which has a similar format to 14BL. I would recommend taking a lab only if your other courses are not too much work as they require a lot of time. I would especially wait to take 14BL if you are taking a writing two class in the spring because labs require a lot of writing that is very time consuming. Otherwise, I would recommend taking the lab because they are very interesting and not too hard. I don't feel as if my learning is suffering from it being online either as the programs they use are very detailed and realistic.

I also plan on taking Chem 14BL, but I'm not sure if it will fill up by the time I enroll. There are a lot of students in 14B right now, so I wonder if they will open more spaces for 14BL.

Hello! I am taking 14BL right now and it is more work than 14B because of labs, lab reports, etc., but it’s definitely doable. The content in 14B, however, is more difficult to understand for me so it involves more independent study time. If your other classes have very heavy workloads than maybe you should take 3, but if you feel prepared, you can probably handle 4 classes.

I am taking it next quarter, just because 14B will still be fresh on my mind. I doubt it will be as helpful online, but I'd rather focus on the physics track next year.

I'm still debating because I would like the hands-on experience of the lab but I think if I wait until fall then most of my knowledge from Chem 14A and 14B will be hazy. However, I have heard the online 14BL is a lot easier, so that is another incentive to taking it in the spring.

Personally I'm going to try to take it next quarter since I've heard it's easier online and especially because I think taking 14b and then lab back-to-back would be easier than waiting for a long period of time because I'm definitely going to forget a lot of what I learned this quarter if it's going to be really applicable in lab

I definitely recommend taking Chem 14BL as soon as you can. I find that it helps to take 14B and 14BL either together or as close as you can take them.

Hope this helps!

Hi! I'm currently taking 14BL and there is definitely more work than 14B because of lab reports and other lab work, but I feel like the content is much easier for me to understand than for 14B. I'm currently in 4 classes and it is a lot of work but is manageable. If your other classes would be a lot of work then it might be better to take 3, but you could totally do 4 if you plan it out well.

I'm taking BL as my fourth class right now and I agree that the material is not very difficult but the work is very tedious. The grading is also very meticulous so each assignment, including the weekly lab reports, definitely requires time and effort. So far, it hasn't been too bad as a fourth class but I think part of that definitely has to do with it being online and not having to perform the experiments myself.

I'm taking it next quarter, along with 14C, to get it over with as soon as possible. We don't know what the situation will be next year and even if the school will be open or not. So I'd rather just get it over with sooner than later.

I'm taking 14BL right now with Prof.Casey and although it can sometimes be overwhelming I think her work is doable and she gives you the whole week to do your lab reports, which usually don't take too much time. The class is mainly asynchronous except for when we have lab, and her lab class is pretty interactive and easy to understand for being online. I would recommend taking the class with her 100%

Definitely not holding back on classes in anticipation for Fall quarter. Not saying it won't happen or that it's unlikely but I am just going to continue along my normal class course and take whatever class I need to following this class! MY enrollment period is so late though!

I'm currently taking chem 14bl with Professor Casey, and I think the work is definetly manageable! The lab activities are done within the designated lab time, so the only weekly homework you have are lab reports (which have taken me 2 hours max? probably?) and optional practice sets/quizzes (which only take 30 ish minutes). The lectures are less than 20 minutes long for each week. I was super nervous for taking lab online but it is not as much work as I thought it'll be. The midterm is this wednesday so we'll see how that goes haha.

I've heard from other people that it's best to take 14BL in the summer (if possible) and since it's online this year, it may be cheaper (since you don't need to live near campus during the summer).

I'm taking BL right now with Dr. Casey! I really like it because the workload is pretty light and Dr. Casey is such a great lecturer plus she's so nice and understanding. She said that the workload definitely increases in person, but if you want the actual lab skills it might be better to take it in person than online, because right now, we're just watching videos of the TA doing the lab...lol. But if you just want to understand the conceptual stuff, I highly recommend taking it with her online. Here is the link to her syllabus if you want! https://padlet.com/jrcasey20/chem14bl_w21

I'm taking BL next quarter and was considering doing CL over the summer since I heard labs in person take up a lot of time.

I am also taking it online, and I still think it is possible to get a good grade. The LAs and TAs are very helpful with answering any questions one may have.

Not planning to take 14BL next quarter, but I've heard that even though it's based on 14A/B material, there are many students who wait a long time to take it but still do fine! So I wouldn't be way too worried about taking it ASAP.

I am taking 14BL right now with four classes and it is manageable. The content and math is much easier to grasp than 14B, but it requires careful attention to detail and is a little tedious. I have Dr. Casey and she is super kind and helpful. If you have a question on a lab report, all you have to do is ask (in office hours or our online platform) and she will give you a detailed, clear explanation. I think it is doable with four classes, but it does still take up a lot of time so it depends on your time management skills. You don't have to rush to take it because it doesn't really involve content that needs to be fresh from 14B.

I'm taking Chem 14 BL right now, the difficulty isn't too bad. Today we have our midterm though--so I'm kinda nervous. Wish me luck!

This was super helpful because I was planning to take a Writing 2 class and 14bl at the same time but I definitely won't be doing that anymore haha. Thanks!!

I'm looking to take all my lab classes in person just so I can have the hands on experience and actually know that I can physically execute the lab. In the spring I'm looking to take 14c but depending how hard the workload is I might hold off on that too.

I was thinking of taking 14BL next quarter and waiting to take 14C until next year. Organic chem is meant to be pretty different from other chem, so there's not much harm in waiting until next year to take it, so if you have 4-5 classes you're thinking of taking but don't want to overload yourself, I think taking BL and waiting on C is a fair idea.

I'm taking it currently, and it is a bit of work. With that being said, the material itself hasn't been that hard yet, and I've heard it's easier and less time consuming than in person

I wonder if the lab skills that would normally be taught in person for 14bl are important for 14cl. If so, it might be a good idea to wait to take 14bl in person fall 2021

I plan to take 14C during spring quarter and 14BL during summer. While it's useful to have it in person, I heard 14BL is easier online so I'm gonna take it before fall 2021.

I am currently taking 14BL and I would have preferred taking it inperson. If you have the chance and time to take it inperson, it might be more beneficial since you will be able to study in an actual lab.

I'm taking 14BL this quarter and I'm actually really enjoying it. Taking it online takes away from the hands-on, physical aspect of labs but Dr. Casey is amazing. She creates opportunities for us to learn from our mistakes and has one of the best CCLE file organization systems ever. As someone who gets lost on CCLE 24/7, I love it.

Honestly, if you have been taking 4 classes per quarter regularly, having 14BL as the 4th class will be a breeze and quite frankly a good breather from the heavy workload of other classes. It's refreshing how this class does not add more content but really forces you to practice your skills in stoichiometry and calculations in general.

However, we are in the middle of a pandemic and you really do not need to add more stress on yourself if you are considering 14BL as a 5th class or if you are simply already overwhelmed at 3 classes. I am usually a huge overachiever and one who hates free time. But for my own sanity, I am not only taking on less credits but also lowering my expectations.

I am enjoying 14BL and I think anyone who has an appreciation for analyzing graphs and experiments and doing calculations will too.

I'm planning to take Chem 14BL next quarter because I'm trying to finish the Chem series as soon as possible! I also feel like it'll help to take Chem 14BL soon after taking Chem 14B and Chem 14A because the material will be fresher in your mind.

I'm currently taking 14BL, B, and Physics 5B along with linear algebra. I personally think it's pretty manageable, but it also depends on the professor you get. I'm taking physics with Schriver and he's a great professor, and his tests are super reasonable so that hasn't been much of an issue at all. Do be warned though: while the content you learn in 14BL isn't inherently hard, the grading can be pretty vague and harsh if you aren't careful. BL is one of those classes where you'll definitely want to attend both TA/Professor office hours to make sure that your answers are exactly in line with what they're looking for.

I plan to take Chem 14BL and 14C together while everything's fresh! This is just a preference, but my previous experience of waiting a quarter to take the next class (LS30 series) did some damage to me since I had to relearn everything while learning completely new things at once.

I'm planning on taking BL because I don't want to start a new series (like 14C or LS7A) and then not take anything over summer, then have to jump back into it, just in case I forget stuff over summer.
