Book Recommendations

Postby Cooper Kinne 2E » Sun Feb 07, 2021 3:13 pm

Hey guys! I've really liked a few threads in the past for movie/TV recommendations, so I thought I would make one for books too :) What are y'alls favorite books?

I have been reading Crime and Punishment for a long time (it's a bit boring in parts) but it's a very interesting book conceptually. Slaughterhouse Five and Fahrenheit 451 are both phenomenal books and I cannot recommend them enough--the latter of which is loosely tied to the thermodynamics of our class :)

Fahrenheit 451 and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents (this one is a lot more serious and non fiction but very eye opening).

A Thousand Splendid Suns is one of my favorites but maybe not the happiest read. Station Eleven is also a cool book, especially since it's set in a post-pandemic world.

Man I could write so many lists of book recs for different genres! Not sure what your preferred genres are but these are mine! For YA fantasy, the Angelfall trilogy and Six of Crows duology. For standalones that read like classics but are relatively recent, The Song of Achilles and All the Light We Cannot See. I also think you can never go wrong with any of the books in the Chronicles of Narnia.

Ragtime by EL Doctorow is an amazing book with overlapping characters and plot lines, set in the 1920s in NY. Seriously an amazing book.

Anything by Neil Gaiman has me sold! He has some great novels, like The Ocean at the End of the Lane and Good Omens, and was part of an amazing graphic novel series called Sandman. Just a great writing style all around!

If you like adult fantasy/scifi, I would check out the Nevernight series and "The Name of the wind". If you are a fan of nonfiction then I would rec "The women who would be king," "No stone left unturned" or "What Lisa Knew"!!

I like sort of sci-fi, fictional books because they're more fun to read than non-fiction to me. So I would recommend the "Uglies" series, the Divide trilogy, or honestly even the twilight books LOL I actually liked them when I was younger :)

My favorite book is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It's realistic fiction based off the Bible story of Abel and Cain, but you don't need to be familiar with that story to enjoy the book in my opinion:)

If you're into fantasy (but not YA fantasy, stuff that's a bit denser and with less romance), read anything by Brandon Sanderson. Right now, I'm reading his Mistborn trilogy and it's amazing.

I definitely recommend The Book Thief if you haven't read it yet! It centers on people during the holocaust and the writing depicts their narratives really well and it's one of the few books I wouldn't mind rereading anytime

I love Kurt Vonnegut! Slaughterhouse Five is one of my favorites as well, but if you're looking to read more, I HIGHLY recommend "[censored] Bless You, Mr. Rosewater". It's pretty short and it's a super easy read because it's vert thought-provoking and extremely funny! One of my favorite books of all time :)

I'll have to check these out! I never read the Twilight books, but the movies are a guilty pleasure of mine :) If you like sci-fi and you haven't read it already, you should absolutely check out "Dune". It's a little slow and a bit confusing at the start, but once you get into it you won't be able to put it down. Plus, there's a movie version coming out later this year that looks really promising!

Atomic Habits by James Clear is amazing for learning how your brain works during habit formation and the science behind motivating yourself. Definitely a really quotable book. Also, Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman is a fascinating book on psychology research but it's very digestible for the average person. Every chapter blows my mind and it reveals a lot about how humans think and experience the world around them. 10/10 recommend it!

I recommend "Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" by Haruki Murakami. Very slow-paced and atmospheric, but is worth reading if only to play around with the ideas thrown around in the book.

I would STRONGLY recommend this incredible novel called "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov, it's an absolute classic and a huge part of Russian culture but is not too well known elsewhere. Which is a shame, because it is probably the most entertaining and charming book I've ever come across. It has everything: incredibly clever humor, a complex and touching romance, some of the most imaginative fantasy I have ever seen, and some very interesting subtext about the political situation of 1920's Russia, like Stalinist repression (it was actually not able to be published until after the author died because of government censorship). You'll also notice if you read it that it basically inspired all those other books about mixing deities into society, like Neil Gaiman's American Gods and the whole Percy Jackson series. It's really a beautiful and super entertaining read.

I like a whole range of books that are mainly fiction (from cheesy romance to sci-fi to fantasy to nail-biting suspense), but my all-time favorites are anything based on a mystery. I honestly don't have much time to read for pleasure anymore unfortunately, but here are some of my favorites over the years: In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, the whole Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan, and most things by James Patterson.

Or if you 're really bored, some wild things go down on Wattpad lol :)

Love seeing all of your recommendations; I will be sure to look into them. My favorite book is Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, but more recently I have read An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green (and am currently reading the sequel), and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

I'm so glad that someone made this thread!!! I have so many favorite books, but I guess I'll just go with the one I'm currently reading that I love. It's called Sisters in Law and it's about Sandra Day O'Connor and RBG! It's a bit dense in terms of info at first, but really worth the read! Also, I love historical fiction novels, and one of my favorite authors is Ruta Sepetys, she has wonderful novels!

One of my favorite books is Freakonomics. It's hard to explain what the book is about, but it really changed my perspective on economics as a whole.

I'm a total nerd when it comes to tech trends / product management stuff so a book that I read recently and absolutely loved was Swipe to Unlock! It breaks down a bunch of complicated tech concepts into simpler terms and also explains why certain big companies (FAANG) make the business decisions they do in regards to their products. If you're at all interested in tech, I'd definitely recommend that you check it out!

I've been needing new book recommendations so this thread is very much needed. I have been just rereading Percy Jackson books when I have the time lol. I have heard that the book Six of Crows is really good. That is going to be my next book, maybe you all will like it too.

Dune is so good! Have you read any of the sequels?

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi! It is a memoir and I don't usually read nonfiction, but this book is super good. It is sad though if you are looking for something more fun.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt have been my two favorite books for years! They're pretty long and a bit slower-paced (especially The Goldfinch) but I wouldn't say they're dense––both are beautifully written and leave you reevaluating your worldview.

I'm currently reading On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous for my Biotechnology class, and it is actually pretty interesting and enjoyable.
