Chem 14C
Hello everyone!
I just realized how insanely close we are to being done with the first half of the 14 series! I just want to say good job to everyone for sticking through it!! As proud and relieved as I am, I have come to the realization that we are going to be starting organic chemistry!
I have heard VERY mixed reviews about orgo. Some people say that it's conceptually easier to understand because you only really deal with like three elements. Other people say it's hard just because it's very specific.
I'm a little nervous to take it because I struggled a little with general chemistry and I'm not sure how well I will understand organic chemistry. However, I'm a little excited because I heard that the professor for spring quarter is awesome!
I want to know what you guys heard and what your thoughts are on it?

Re: Chem 14C
hi!
I have also heard mixed reviews. One thing that seems to be consistent is that if you like biology, org chem will be easier?? not sure if this is true.
But I think it really depends on how you think problems through. Some people get ochem right off the bat and some don't. But don't feel discouraged!! We will all support each other through the chem series!

I've heard that it is a lot of memorization. Some friend's who've already taken it told me that you really need to dedicate time to studying because it is the kind of material that requires a good work ethic. On the group me someone mentioned that there are study kits on amazon that might help, I think I will check those out!

Hi! I have heard that it really just depends on the person. People that absolutely hate gen-chem tend to think the o-chem is easier. Personally, I really liked gen-chem though so I really don't know what to expect.

My friend is taking ochem rn and he says it's not too bad! I feel like as long as you put in the effort to understand the material you'll be okay:) I'm kinda nervous too
Re: Chem 14C
I've heard that 14C isn't as bad as people make it out to be. My friend told me its a lot of memorization, but not very difficult conceptually.

I've also heard mixed answers about organic chemistry, but the general consensus seems to be that it is a lot of memorization. I think as long as you're willing to put in enough work and commit enough time, then it won't be so bad. I've also heard that getting a model kit is pretty useful though for the class!

Re: Chem 14C
I am also nervous about ochem because I have heard that it is really hard. It is the class that everyone works up when they talk about pre-med classes... I am going to try and just stay on top of the material and do my best. I feel like that is all we can do but if anyone has any tips for what might be effective ways to study/prepare that would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard mixed reviews but mostly people saying that it is very difficult. I honestly tend to believe the people that say its easier for those that disliked gen chem but honestly, as long as you try I'm sure you'll do great!

Re: Chem 14C
I have also definitely heard mixed reviews. Like many have already said, I have heard that it is mostly memorization. Some people have told me they felt it was very difficult, but others have said that it is easier than 14B so I'm really not sure.

Re: Chem 14C
From what I hear ochem is pretty different from chemistry. I hear just because you're good at chemistry doesn't mean you'll be good at ochem.

Re: Chem 14C
I've heard that some people who struggled with other parts of chemistry conceptually sometimes enjoy 14C more since its a bit different. I've heard it compared to preferring geometry or algebra. So it may appear daunting but when we get into it, you may really enjoy it. We'll find out!

Re: Chem 14C
I tried to sign up for 14C in my second pass and it was full. Any advice on how to possibly get in?

Re: Chem 14C
I've heard some people say that if 14 A/B weren't the best for them, then 14 C is sometimes better (and vice versa). I'm not sure how true that is, but everyone has their strengths and weaknesses! Good luck to everyone taking 14C next quarter :)

Re: Chem 14C
Honestly I asked a friend who is graduating this year and he said that ochem is so terrible just because of how much its based on conceptualizing rather than computing, which is what we’re used to so far. At the same time I also heard it’s a lot of memorization which I think I’m comfortable at but I need to prepare myself for it :(

Re: Chem 14C
I'm honestly very nervous about organic chemistry because I've heard so many stories of how hard it is. However, I've recently also been told that it's not that bad and could be better than chem 14a/b. I think it'll be up to personal preference, but definitely expect to put a lot of time into studying for the class!

Re: Chem 14C
It's a mixed response from the people I've spoken to regarding their experiences with CHEM14C, however I will say that you shouldn't let anyone's individual negative experiences with the class affect how you choose to approach it. You have the potential to do amazing in that class, so do your best to make it happen! Good luck! :)
