Postby Andrew Nguyen 2K » Mon Jan 17, 2022 6:39 pm

With everything being online does anyone have good tips for fighting burnout especially through zoom?

Hi! Sometimes to deal with burnout I'll switch up the location where I attend online class... for example, I'll take my notebook and laptop to the Study, an open table by Cafe 1919, or even to campus by Kerchoff/Janss. I'll also take notes in different ways sometimes (i.e. computer vs paper, using colors/not) -- although make sure you're not just making things confusing. Last thing I do is to make sure I don't spend too much time on my computer in general otherwise so it doesn't all add up. Hope this maybe helps? And healthy snacks are always a plus.

I found a helpful article explaining some of the reasons why we get zoom fatigue and ways to lessen its effects. I recommend taking breaks not just by looking away from the screen but actually going outside. For my eyes at least, the sunlight seems more rejuvenating than staying inside. Pro tip: Do NOT use your break to look at your phone. It's just more screen time so your brain and eyes get even more tired. Hope this helps and good luck!

the amount of interaction we get with zoom decreases in comparison to normal class, so our brains is more fatigue staying in the same place.

Definitely sleeping early and going to class outside. I find that if I'm outside and not in an enclosed space I always pay attention in class better, maybe its the sunlight haha.

Hi Andrew!

I totally understand burnout is so real, and I am there with you. I think for zoom specifically, when you take breaks, try not to use other devices because that will strain your eyes and you may get a headache/to feel worse. If you need extra assistance there are so many resources on campus such as CAPS, but my advice takes a day or two where you step away from your classes if you can, or reach out to your professors if you can.

Hey! A huge huge tip I found to work was switching up the locations I do work in. This may not work for everyone but it serves to refresh me and give me a change of space that invigorates me. I really like the Charles Young Library, the Bombshelter, and sometimes I even work on a random bench I find outside on campus. Being outdoors really helps a lot in my experience. In addition, I like working out and meditating to relieve stress and take my mind off of school, even if for a short period of time.

Thank you all so much for the tips I have tried a few and they really help. Plus with things going back in person it is very nice.

Being online is definitely draining! I tend to make sure I take a break away from my computer especially if I've been on it all day. Maybe try an hour in the middle of the day to get off the computer and then and then get off once it's too late to get some good rest at night before opening ur computer the next day.

I started taking my online classes (recorded and zoom) in random places on campus so that I wasn't just in my room at my desk or in the lounge. It's definitely helped it feel less monotonous and the action of walking to "class" or wherever definitely helped it feel like less of a chore.
