The work function is an energy expression; therefore we use J.

Just to add on: the work function is the energy needed to remove an electron, also known as the threshold energy. The unit for energy is J (joule); as such, the unit for work function is J.

Can someone identify what exactly the function is?

1 J = kg*(m/s)^2. It is really helpful to convert a joule to its base units so that when you are doing calculations, you can easily cross out units and see what your final answer should be.
