Work Function

In most of the problems I've seen, the work function always seems to be something given, is it ever something that we will need to calculate ourselves? If we do calculate it ourselves, do convert our answer from joules to electron-volts?

The SI unit for the work function is Joules (J). If you're given e-volts, then you would have to convert the unit to joules.

Work function can be given in Joules or as eV, however from the information given in the question we can find the work function. Work function is just the amount energy required to separate an electron from the metal.

There could be a problem where you are given the light energy and the energy from the electrons and will have to find the work function.

Generally, it is useful to know that kinetic energy is equal to hv-(work function) so even though work function is not given it should be easy to use other given information to figure it out.
