After an electron is ejected from the metal, they will gravitate towards the detector because the detector has a slightly positive charge and the election has a negative charge. The detector is also connected to the metal, allowing the electron to make its way back to the metal. I assume the loss of the electron creates some instability within the metal (a slightly positive charge) that will attract the electron back in order to return to a stable state.
