Empirical Equation

Postby Emilee Hosking 1D » Thu Oct 11, 2018 4:23 pm

In my notes from 10-10-18, I have that "E(photon)=threshold energy +E(kinetic)"
Is threshold energy a constant that I should memorize, or will it be a value that is given in the problem/I will be asked to solve for?

The threshold energy differs with each metal used. So for different problems using the same metal, the work function or threshold energy would remain the same.

The threshold energy differs between various metals, just like the spectra for different elements is different. This is because the change in energy from level to level is different depending on the element.

Is work function the same thing as threshold energy?

Yes, they both refer to the energy required to emit an electron from the metal surface.
