Metals and Electrons

Postby Danieljm1B » Sun Jun 30, 2019 2:41 pm

What happens to the structure of metals when electrons are being removed through the photoelectric effect?

The metal surface will develop a positive charge due to this removal of electrons.

Other than the metal becoming a cation are there any other structural changes in the metal? Like would the electron orbital be closer to the nucleus because of the loss of the electron?

I don't think there would be any change in the structural properties of the metal with a change in the electrical charge.
