Photoelectric Effect diagram

Why would the detector be the one to figure the speed of the electron? Why would it even want to find out the speed?

I don't think this part of detection is as important as the fact that it picks up on electron emission in the first place because we work more with the equations pertaining to how much energy is present on either side of the work function. However, this might be a good question for your TA or Dr. Lavelle.

The information the detector picks up tells us about the energy of the electron (if they are emitted) and therefore can reveal important traits of the metal and/or light source.

The detector is a machine that detects the speed of the particle. This will allow us to calculate other measures like de Broglie wavelength.
