Question about the application of the effect

Postby Anish Patel 4B » Fri Oct 11, 2019 12:19 am

Are there any real-world/naturally occurring examples of the photoelectric effect? I don't see how this effect manifests itself besides in a laboratory setting.

Hello! I asked Doctor Lavelle this at his office hours and he essentially explained that although there are not many practical applications, it helps us understand greatly both what a photon is, how it behaves, and the overall structure of atoms. He did mention that it can help us distinguish different light waves allowing us to create different materials and be able to predict how they will react with light. I hope this helps!

To add on to the previous response, as far as theoretical applications, the photoelectric experiment also indicated that the wave model of light alone could not explain all observed behaviors (such as the photoelectric effect).
