Unit of measurements for E=hv

Postby 904914037 » Wed Oct 16, 2019 9:30 pm

Is the unit of measurement E in the equation E=hv, J per photon? I noticed that for question B9, the solution manual says that E=hv gives us the energy per photons so I just wanted to confirm that J per photon is the unit for E. Thank you!

Yes! That is the correct unit for energy in the E=hv equation. It gives you the amount of Joules of energy per photon.

Yes! The units for E is joules but it's also joules per photon.

The equation E=hv has the basic units of Joules, but if you think back to the photoelectric effect and the incoming light, the units also refer to the amount of energy per photon. Keeping this in the back of your mind will help you make any conversions that are necessary to figure out how many photons are within a given amount of energy (or even watts in some cases).

The unit is Joules, but in relation to photoelectric effect it is Joules per photon, since that is the particle whose energy we're trying to calculate.

For E=hv, h has the unit J*s and v has hz or s^-1 so the answer should come out to be in just joules J (s*s^-1=1), however for this question the v calculated is per photon so it is ok to make it J per photon.

Thank you for the responses!
