relation of photoelectric effect to equations

does the photoelectric effect prove the equations we use like E=hv? i don't get what the photoelectric effect proves?

The equation E=hv is not exactly proven by the photoelectric effect, but it shows the positive relationship between energy of the photon and frequency. The photoelectric effect proves (or shows) that photons have particle-like properties, since increasing the intensity of light did not eject electrons, but increasing the frequency did.

When scientists first carried out the photoelectric experiment, they first shone a longer wavelength (or smaller frequency) of high intensity light on a metal. However, this didn't eject any electrons. It wasn't until they increased the frequency of the light (or shorter wavelength) that the electrons were ejected from the metal. Intensity also doesn't play a factor in whether or not there is sufficient energy to eject electrons from a metal. It only determines the number of electrons ejected (10 photons = 10 electrons ejected).

The equation E = hv basically confirms that a high frequency (or shorter wavelength, if we're looking at E = hc/λ) is needed for a photon to have sufficient energy to eject an electron.
